Trying to part a 2.8" flywheel off bar stock and failing...

Along with the other good replies, I've parted 2.375" aluminum off in my 9x20 lathe but I was using my slightly bored out steady rest and supported the tool from below with an adjustable "crutch". It is scary when you dig in. I set the tool at center height. The crutch and steady rest really...

    Manual Engraving in 3D

Hi, I've had this home made pantograph for some time now. I usually only use it to put numbers or letters on something. Awhile back my wife brought home a cast iron acanthus do-dad for a wall ornament. I thought it would make a good experiment to see if I could reproduce it in 3d at a 2:1 scale...

WALKING BEAM STIRLING, daryl boyd plans.

Hi, I built one from Daryl's site and used 1" copper pipe and 1.25" stroke. A 1/2" cast iron pipe cap fitting turns down nicely for a piston. Mine runs well but takes a lot of heat to get going. Rich

    AlphaVictory Engine Build

IronHorse I'm certainly no expert on Stirling engines, but I have built a "tin can" stirling engine and have run it for hours trying different things. One thing I've noticed is that it takes several minutes of heat to get it going. Don't even try to spin it for a few minutes and see if that...

Cutting fins and piston ring grooves with a slitter saw

I think cutting in reverse is better since the chuck can't unscrew from the table spindle. I've never tried that yet. Thanks, Rich

    fly ball governor

Download this book from Google Books. It has an entire chapter on governors with very clear and simple explanations. "Elements_of_heat_power_engineering.pdf" After posting a couple of days ago I went on a mission to find something useful for designing information. The math is pretty deep, but...

    Gear Hob -First effort

Forgot to post the results of all the gear hobbing effort to obtain a mechanical Digital Readout. It's crude but works for me. The last wheel on the right has been blacked out due to it's numbered 0-12 for inches of a foot. I use the machine dial for the thousandths. Rich

Power feed for Milling Machine using 12v VW windscreen motor

I've got a similar setup on my X3. Cheap and works for me. I use a 6V/12V/12V boost charger and a dead battery to get three speeds out of it. Mine disengages by sliding it outwards on an extra long stud when not in use. The X3 has a simple slot on the end of the X axis shaft for driving the...

    8" Rotary Table

Ham, Marv Klotz has a great web sitehttp://www.myvirtualnetwork.com/mklotz/ with a couple programs specifically for what you may be after for calculations. One (divhead) lets you input different ratios, and the other (divplates) figures out the dividing plates you need for that ratio. I have a...

    Building a 120mm rotary table

Arnold, I've got to tell you...Have you ever picked up a book and couldn't put it down? I'm sort of new around here, and I noticed this thread awhile back but never took the time to read it. I finally started reading this around 8pm California time last night but couldn't finish due to needing...

    Posting Screen Shots

Hi, I used to write operating manuals awhile ago and I remember using the "ALT-PRINTSCREEN" trick to put a screen shot from an application into say an MS Word document or whatever by pasting the screen shot. Can this be done on message boards such as this? Rich
