Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info.:)
I'll check out the starret but I'm not sure about the idea of using a socket.
Isn't it a problem to be turning with just one handle as it might pull the tap to one side?
How do you make a tap wrench, not the sliding jaw type?
Does anyone know of any plans?

Hi Folks,
Can anyone recommend a really good tap wrench for the larger sizes of tap, sat 10mm upwards.
I find that the commercial cast variety always come loose on the tap when applying a fair amount of torque.
That is even after tightening with a length of rod.
The design seems faulty...
Hi Guys,
Thanks very much for the advice.
Good point about the nut length I hadn't thought of that.
Happily it can cut the other sizes, 1.25, 1.5 etc it is just the 1.75 that is missing.
I will give it a try and see how the nut fits.

Hi Folks,
I was going to attempt to thread a piece of rod using and carbide threading tip which is 1.75mm for a 12mm thread when I noticed that my Warco lathe for some strange reason does not have a 1.75 gearbox setting.
It has a 1.8 instead.
Would this be acceptable or would the...
Hi Folks,
I am just making some holders for some carbide threading inserts and could do with a little advice please.
The inserts have chip breakers but should the holder have a slight downward rake as the tips are vertical on the cutting face?
I have seen some tool holders with a built in...
Hi Folks,
I am attempting to grind a threading tool to the correct root radius for a Whitworth thread of 2.25" dia x 8 tpi.
Could someone explain how to calculate the root angle and depth of thread please?:noidea:
Thanks,
Arnak
Hi Tom,
Yes, that is correct it is 2 1/4" x 8 tpi.
Although I make mine to be a 55 degree thread.
I am actually making the 5c collet nose to fit straight onto the spindle.

Hi Folks,
Thanks for all the replies.
I'll go for rounding the tip of the threading tool slightly.
I am making a male thread first on a piece of scrap as a go no go gauge as suggested.

Hi Folks,
I am going to attempt to make a collet chuck for my spindle nose.
The question I have is that the thread required is quite deep and has a rounded root.
If I use a standard threading tool the root would be deeper than it should be and the bottom of the root would be a sharp angle...
Hi Folks,
Just in case anyone is interested I made a small modification to my Major Mill, it might be applicable to similar machines?
I found that I needed to mill out some rectangular slots for a slide valve.
The mill was brought with a power feed for left - right travel but the electric...
Hi,
I don't see how using it as a drill would cause any problems at all, after all it is listed as a drilling / milling machine.
Using it as a drill would put less wear and tear on the machine than milling surely?
The only problem I can see is the need to keep changing from one setup to...
Hi Nedd,
Yeah, thanks.
I'll have another look as I did try last year but I am in the depths of Wales and with the recession there don't seem to be many local firms left. :(
At one time there was one just up the road but it closed, I'll have another look as that would be the best way to get...
Hi Stuart,
Great, thanks for those links. ;D
Hi John,
I need the extra length as you surely don't expect me to get it right the time do you ??? :big:

Hi,
Does anyone know where I can order short lengths of Steel in the UK? ???
I need about 6" of 3" dia steel for a chuck spindle adaptor to make my ER32 collet holder.
Preferably through mail order as I live in South Wales. :P
Noggin Ends don't go up to that size and the cost of a metre is...
