Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

1st test with the generator running at 330 rpm in the lathe. Only one of the 16 magnets in place and still without back iron to direct the magnetic flux.

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

Added insulated slip rings. Next will be the stator.

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

Obsolete coils removed and wires replace to reduce the imbalance and stripped an old servo motor to serve as a faux (imitation) exciter.

Status today. Note, all temporary slit-screws and hex screws will be replaced later by studs and nuts.

Bates & Edmonds gas engine electric plant

@Rustkolector Thanks for the answers. Once I get it running on gasoline, I will look into converting it to propane. I already have all the parts for the demand valve as it can be found on the internet. Only detail I'm lacking is what pressure of propane I should deliver to the demand valve...

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

The wheel of a hover board might be even better as it already contains the magnets. For the price of the magnets I now need for the ceiling fan, one can also buy a 2nd had or broken hover board.

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

Carefull reversed engineering (not to damage the thin wires) shows that I'm lucky. The main coil is on the outside and the 2nd phase and coils to reduce speed are all on the inside, so easy to be removed. 2nd though: this is more likely due to design rather than luck, but anyway I'm happy.

All bronze bushings ans clips in place. Almost a pitty that all of this will become invisible in the final engine.

Crankshaft bearings, crankshaft, camshaft (still without cams) and gears are in and running smooth. Again a main hurdle towards a running engine taken.

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

I will go for this look. Stator and rotor-bearings are attached to the base plate which gives a real "open" look and allows careful alignment/shimming in X, Y, Z and Rx and Ry of the rotor with respect to the engine and the stator with respect to the rotor.

Many thanks for all the answers. Once my replica of the 1937 Industrie Diesel 2VD5 is ready, I will continue with the electric/magnetic parts of my generator. I build this generator predominantly to increase the "fly wheel inertia" to get a low RPM without having to add a too big and...

Very nice generator. I remember having it seen before, but cannot recall where. Maybe in the German Journal "Maschinen im Modellbau" that I have a subscription on. I'm building my own generator and I'm wondering: how you did determine the ratio between coils and magnets? I though that you...

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

Dan, Thanks, this is what I intend to do. Mine has 6 wires, so I have to figure out which give a decent voltage. Inner and outer coils are connected. I ruined the outer shells getting the motor open. Next time I know how to do it in a more gentle way. Anyway, I did not plan to use them as I...

Nice model and generator!!! Given that you have propane as fuel, how do you lubricate the piston/cylinder? For my 2VD5 I was first thinking of running it on petrol with a few % oil for lubrication. However, propane might be nicer as that allows to place the carburetor further away (out of...

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

Dan, Would be great to share some the thoughts. I'm now look i ng on how the various coils are wound. The aux/starter coil consists of at least two coils and the main 3 speed coil consists of at least 3 or 4 coils.

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

The rotor I have is 130 mm (~5 inch) in diameter which is almost perfect to scale 1:10. I will keep the washing machine motor in my mind if I ever need a bigger one.

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

Started building a generator for my 2VD5. Primarily to increase the rotational inertia to lower the rpm without increasing the size of the flywheel. The rotor comes from the stator of an old ceiling fan. The stator will get permanent magnets.

Building a twin cylinder inline i.c. engine.

How does the piston look internally i.e. a full round hole or a slot in which the small end is attached? Can you show a CAD picture of your piston showing these details?

    De Industrie 2VD5

Main bearing plates pre-machined in a package, now mounted for line boring to bring to size and improve concentricity. Had to stop the cnc program after each pass to remove a birdsnest. Playing with feed, speed and depth of cut did not result in chip breaking. Soft and tough material, but nice...
