    CNC Sherline Lathe Project

All of the electronics are tucked away in a plastic tub, at least for now. It moves! Guess I should write some code and actually CUT something... but at least I know the parting tool holder works. Just for grins I hacked at a piece of brass hex stock with it. I still need to set up the...

    CNC Sherline Lathe Project

Here's another lathe update. To rework that parting tool holder, I couldn't just throw it in a vise, and hack at the tool's seating surface, because none of the outer surfaces of the holder are squared up. So, I set up the toolpost in my mill, and locked the holder into it's working position...

Great work, Zeep! That's a bunch of nice-looking parts.

The resistors attach to pins 1 and 5 of the DB-9 cable, anywhere that's convenient. http://www.geckodrive.com/upload/G540%20REV4%20MANUAL.pdf

CNC Milling - a "how not to" compendium

Too true, taped-down parts can 'squirm' a bit under heavy cutting, if they aren't against a rigid stop of some sort.

I just said it that way 'cause there's no Y on a lathe. ;D There's no reason you couldn't switch X and Y, and just change the pinouts in Mach3.

    SX3 Conversion

Sure thing. You'll have to add a resistor between two pins on each cable at the gecko end... or inside the switchbox... hmmm... Those switchboxes are a good idea, just use two, one each for X and Z, and leave Y hooked up to the mill full-time.

hey, that's why it has DB-9 plugs! Nothing wrong with swapping it. No way I was going to use my Xylotex on a second machine, though. It's bad enough using it for ONE machine. ;D Besides, it's tucked away in the mill enclosure.

New Project - Not for the beginner

Hey, I suggested a Klein Bottle a year ago in response to Marv's Moebius Napkin Rings. ;D Still, the Klein Boiler is impressive!

Ah, wiring the breakout board is a breeze, especially after you've gotten experience from the 540. I guess I should update my "lathe project" thread...

Funny, Zeep just mentioned tetanus boosters a few days ago...

    Ideas

The 381's I've just put on my little Sherline SEEM like monsters, but I've only cut air with the thing so far. They're certainly a lot more powerful than the 269's on my mill, that are powered with one of the many 24volt drivers available. I know that's no help... ummm... put a torque wrench...

    SX3 Conversion

You'll be spoiled by the G540 and not even know it! ;D When it comes time to power the lathe, buy a pair of G251's, which are the boards inside the G540, and you can use the same Mach settings for both machines' stepper drivers.

    Hello from Richmond VA

That thimble engine is the "rocker" that so many of us went nuts over a few months ago. The plans are available here, I think.

    Little CNC lathe

It just comes with males, to plug into the drives. The other end of each cable is hardwired to a motor.

    Easy Question on Collet Rings

Can you chuck a collet block in the lathe with a collet clamped on something to keep everything tight, and face the ring without hitting the collet threads?
