Baby lathes, any experience with them?

I like the dovetail design of the Murad lathes. Reminds me of the Hardinge lathes I used to run... if they weren't so big I'd buy one in a heartbeat. How does the unimat that you own now compare to your old pultra? Those pultras look like neat little machines! You also mentioned owning a...

Baby lathes, any experience with them?

Tom, Have you had a chance to use a Taig at all? It would be nice to see what someone who uses a sherline thinks of the taigs. Wizard69. I have been thinking about it, and I could purchase one of these mills and then surface grind a heavy piece of steel to mount it onto. That would...

    Indexable Endmill - Inserts Help

The other numbers are telling you thinks like... corner radius, carbide grade, if the insert is coated or not and other things depending on the brand. Once one corner is worn you can rotate the insert 180 degrees and use the other corner. You can't flip it around and use the back side...

Baby lathes, any experience with them?

I was considering a watchmakers lathe, but I noticed alot of their crossslides are pretty basic, and I kind of steered away from that option. The taig option with 5c collets wouldn't be a bad option since I already have a set of those, I'll have to see if you can still put a small 3 jaw...

    Anet A8

The last time I've used a 3d printer was back in 2006. Since then I've kind of shrugged them off as the quality of parts it made wasn't very good. After seeing what you guys are doing with them Ive got to say they have come along way in 10 years! Looks like I have some research to do.

Baby lathes, any experience with them?

I'm talking about sherlines, taigs , or other brands around the same size. I really like the look and precision of the cowells, but for now that's a dream that is many dollars away. I'd like to know what you feel their capability is when it comes to precision, attachments, and abilities. The...

    '60' Sterling engine questions

Engine now runs on a cheapo tea candle. I will probs my do some more tinkering with it, but I'm happy to get it running ad it was intended! I ended up pressing the flywheel off and giving myself a little more gap between the spindle and flywheel/crank assembly. I figured that would give...

Polishing aluminum to a mirror finish?

Looks like I need some practice using buffing wheels, and or a softer wheel. While doing some test runs with a buffing wheel I was having some issues with inconsistent finish. I noticed some of the info online suggests a softer wheel when you are close to being done, and I wonder if the hard...

I got it to run with a paraffin candle! Started up within seconds of lighting it. Hopefully the picture uploads. I may try to make a YouTube video of it starting up so you guys can see if you notice any problems.

    '60' Sterling engine questions

What do you think of the gap? My displacer diameter is 1.8mm smaller then the glass I.D. Does that sound about right? I made that to what the print said.

    '60' Sterling engine questions

It looks like the original designer used a tea candle, so I figured I would use one too. If my next attempt doesn't work I will try that.

    '60' Sterling engine questions

Here is an update on the engine. I remade the displacer, displacer shaft, and displacer bushing. I used aluminum for the displacer this time to lighten it up, and I have a .01 inch sidewall. The displacer bushing was lapped to size and is no bigger the .0002" over the rod size. Could be...

Polishing aluminum to a mirror finish?

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I'll try some of these aluminum polishes and see how it turns out. I've been staying away from using buffing wheels because I don't want to round the edges of my part.

Polishing aluminum to a mirror finish?

Anyone have tips for polishing aluminum to a mirror finish? I have alot of experience polishing hard steels and carbide, but the same techniques don't work for aluminum. So far I've been working my way up to 3000 grit sandpaper and then I polish using #3 diamond paste (yellow). It gives...

    '60' Sterling engine questions

Thanks for the help, good information to know. Where you saying that the displacer should move 1.5 times what the piston moves or 10 times if it's a low temp? I think before I do anything major to it I'm going to try a different heat source since I'm using the cheapo not hot enough candles...
