    Commercial Lost Foam Casting Process

Yes interesting. The injection molding of the foam cores is still an expensive and tedious process. (as in the video stated, costs may stay similar). @Green Twin: Now we are waiting that you open the mold making and Injection molding department in the shop. What I found funny when I saw...

Not an engine! More a "function model" of a machine.

Hello, I just came across a post for a Bengs model. Inspired by their harbor crane model. https://www.bengs-modellbau.de/en/Harbor-Crane-Hercules/2260 I thought I would make a similar thing and found this photo. It has no wooden boom...

What is your purpose in getting into the hobby of building model engines?

Seems you had a different experience, I gave up on showing the things. (I just bore the people and will feel weird afterwards) Frustration about it, is very (or relatively?) limited. A club or exhibition with more than yourself makes you feel less weird I guess. But I am a "one kid"...

Grasshopper Half Beam Steam Engine from Bengs

Yes, they are some "in between" not a "ready machined kit", not a materials only. I was having an eye on the valve steam engine, but too many parts pre-manufactured. Material kits are also sometimes not the most clever option, if heavy things are shipped long distance. Difficult to please...

Starting with the Boll Aero 18

No! Misunderstanding, I am not scared of the fuel, I am scared that the engine is not running and I cannot tell if the wrong fuel mix is the reason or some problem with the engine. (because it will be the first engine ever) If you can buy a proven mix of fuel, like in the UK; focus can be on the...

Video showing how a mold for a lathe bed is made.

No, I do not own a lathe (lucky me my employer bought a 2nd hand lathe). I now wonder how they make the lathes. (I mean cast the beds) The beds come "delivered with a truck". ( had a glimpse into the factory when I bought a follow rest last year) They use something like this to machine (as far...

Starting with the Boll Aero 18

Can a diy mix be tested (without injury?),without motor? I fear that it is not "beginner friendly" to try debugging fuel recipies and faulty manufactured engine at same time. Greetings Timo

    INSPECTION REPORT, EXCEL

I bought a caliper with a USB device, (a caliper with Bluetooth is also available at "even more" $$$$, micrometers and dial gauges are on the market as well). My device has a foot pedal. If I push the foot switch it writes the number into Excel (or Libre office really) and jumps into the next...

Starting with the Boll Aero 18

Thank you for reply, another difficult thing seems to be to get the fuel from somewhere. It seems like a project in itself, so I reconsider things.

Starting with the Boll Aero 18

On a scale from 1-10 how difficult is that engine to build? 10 beeing difficult!

What is your purpose in getting into the hobby of building model engines?

Did you learn German for it? Now things become easy, because we can just copy text to google. (sometimes it is a horrible mess, but often enough we can guess the content). Investment casting of turbine blades? (how hard can it be? haha) https://www.mdpi.com/2075-4701/12/5/817

    Gear cutting on mini mill

I gave it a try today. 8 mm brass bar, 6 tooth, depth of cut 2.25 mm. That is how the pinion looked like after cutting the end off. Now I have a pinion. Conclusion : inconclusive  with a disc cutter I would try to cut one round, offset a little and do two more cuts one up one down. A...

    Gear cutting on mini mill

Yes and no. As I think (from what I was reading recently), undercut means that the tooth at the root diameter is thinner than at the pitch circle. (dashed line). But when the Tool can pe "pulled" out to the side without interference it should be possible to cut the gap, or not? A four tooth...

    Budget HSS lathe tool grinder

Possibly too coarse, plus the electroplated wheel will loose diamonds if it gets too hot. So there are not enough diamonds in the first place and they get lost. Was an experiment and I gave it a try it did not work and the seller did not claim it would. I am not too disappointed and the...

What is your purpose in getting into the hobby of building model engines?

I was quite happy and showed it proudly to some people. The reactions were "what is it good for?", "what does it do?", "why did you make it?" "how much does it cost?", "why do you need it?". I do not like to show the stuff to people anymore  Forum is a "protected" space. Making more of the...

    Budget HSS lathe tool grinder

Caution is always a good thing when grinding. I tried to cut of some carbide rounds with one of those diamond tile blades for the 4" angle grinder.(electroplated diamond) It did not work at all. I just ruined the blades (two brands). So be careful, there might be a 2nd risk that you damage the...

    Gear cutting on mini mill

Hello, no I do not get it. Will it make a real undercut? For the screenshots from the Freecad program I could "pull" the tooth gap out radially. Undercut means, I thought, that it would not be possible to make a disc cutter with the right profile. I might try it and post the results here. But...

    Gear cutting on mini mill

Youtube channels I checked out: LSCAD: (very good approachable DIY gear content, using commercial tooling) https://www.youtube.com/@prof-rieg AndysMachines: All sorts of gear cutting methods. (e.g. mentioned method, using a slitting saw, hobbing and more see post from TSutrina) Evolvent design...

    Gear cutting on mini mill

Yes, most gears are hobbed. There are hobs for final dimension and others have slightly different tooth to give a grinding allowance. The symbol on the hob suggests an undercut. From the side you can see the profile of the "rack". "basically a glorified tap"?
