Hobbing a Pulley for driving accessories for Model Steam Engines or Toy Steam Engines

I had more success with spiral flute taps, because the workpiece is transported more reliable. Made a serrated wheel for the 3d printer and it works O.K.. If you calculate the diameter and infeed you can also make small usable worm-wheels. A matching bolt is the worm.

    Vevor rotary table troubles

I bought a 4" Vertex few month ago. Their sales was very friendly and they sold me what I wanted even though I am not a "volume buyer". I did not inspect it, I just trust it as is. I replaced the handwheel with a stepper motor and made an Aluminium plate that bolts on top of the T-slots. The...

Hobby or more....hobby and make money...

I imagine it is difficult. When you needed something to "focus and forget" would you have bought a ready to run engine? I guess the customer group is comparatively small. Small utility engines can be bought for very little money. (can buy a small 4 stroke engine for under 100 USD) scooters...

Is there a program to make a 3D model with measurements that is free?

You could try Freecad. worst case you do not like it. But you will probably need to spend some time to figure it out.

Finding a good small cnc cad-cam milling machine in NZ.

I bought a single flute countersink a while ago. The cone seems to prevent chatter. Works well on the medium size drill press. Low rpm and workpiece clamped down.

    High pressure pump

Very true! What is considered high pressure? What do you want to pump? Volume per time? Energy source you have in mind? Are you in it for the build fun, or just want a pump? (make or buy or re-purpose?) Pumps are relatively cheap compared to the effort to make one. Greetings Timo

    Metal 3D printing filament

During sintering of metal powder shrinkage in this magnitude is not unusual. (actually 10% sounds not much) Voids are removed during the sintering. Pressed green parts look like a solid metal, but can be crumbled.

    Metal 3D printing filament

:-O The shrinkage should be relatively constant. I saw similar process in a factory making small mechanical parts (22 years ago). Injection molding was used instead of printing. Big shrinkage in the range of 1/3 or more (as I remember), but parts almost to final dimension with very little post...

Thoughts on cooling a model engine with oil instead of water

Our roads here have lots of sine-wave holes, this could be the solution.

Best cheap ish lathe for this?

Haha 100 kg :). I am not saying that a small lathe does not work (I really do not know). I would guess when you add a zero you are still far away from "overkill". That nice little Hardinge weights in at about 800 kg (1700 lbs) https://www.lathes.co.uk/hardinge-hlv-h-catalog/ Depends on...

    Cam Grinder questions / suggestions

CBN, Cubic Boron Nitride. rel. expensive, usually more expensive than corresponding diamond wheel nasty hard, aggressive cutting, (good thing, less heat in work piece) if treated with care lasts a long time and does not require as much re-dressing (difficult to re-dress in the home shop)...

    Cam Grinder questions / suggestions

I think it boils, once again, down to the question if the grinder is the project or the tool for a project. And.... how many cams you want to grind. It seems that it can be a useful tool for someone who is proficient and productive. For a (many) complicated engine it may be worth it? Not too...

    PIP 3 Cylinder Radial

Impressive things we see here. How did you get the ring gear?

    Semi-Lost-PLA Casting Method

If I think of a tree i immagine something like this, were parts are combined to larger groups. Different parts can be combines more or less random. The main advantages would be that the parts can be very close to final dimension. Some weird shapes are possible that would require fiddling...

Another (unsure) Upshur twin (lots of beginner questions?)

Made the fins. Checked the gear mesh. Small gear was re-done (what 6 times? :) ). I made the flywheel from a disc of round stock that I found on the pile, and the flywheelpulley came from a piece of 2" bar stock. Flywheelbushing I skipped yesterday. It is still pending..... Cutting the fins...

    Dovetail messed up

Haha, poor you! Did you already cut the other part? 30% of my mistakes are incompetence, 80% impatience, 10% poor or wrong equipment and at least 20% someone elses fault. The remaining 70% is casued by my poor math performance and insufficient thinking ahead. In this case it is obviously...

Another (unsure) Upshur twin (lots of beginner questions?)

Saturday afternoon, I am not very fast. Slowly doing one by one part. (mislpacing tools and braking M2 taps 😥) The cylinder heads are only "half done". Waiting for a tap to come that has 1/4-32 TPI. I did not cut them off. Who knows if the extra stock is useful when drilling the holes for on...

    Steam Engine

That is a nice collection of cross sections. Were those domed pistons made from cast iron? My guess would have been that this is related to pattern removal and beeing able to cast concentric round pieces easy.

    Welder

As long as I can grind it all to a flat I call it good (enough)! ( Someone is making fun of my welding skills? I put a mask on his head and a torch in his left hand; switch on the welder and wait what comes up next . Only once it resulted in a nice TIG weld. Seriously, if "good...

Open workshop at the Flywheel Friends Bad Boll (Germany) in May 2024 with the special topic of Hot Bulb meeting

Not very "model-engine" . I occasionally saw a Lanz running and it always nice to see."Marcus Lanz" is all I get when I search for "Lanz" on Youtube. That is funny and sad at the same time. p.s. what is the meaning of "Glühkopfzündung" with regard to TV-talk shows?
