    Strictly IC ISSUE 37

Then he should sell the rights to someone who will do something with them. Why sit on them perpetually? What is that going to achieve for the hobby? .

    Shows keep getting smaller!

I think all the old engine shows here have folded. We never had a model engine show here. NAMES was a 12 hour drive one way for me. .

    Annealing gray iron castings

The cast iron book I mention above notes that by slowly cooling an annealed casting, you can also get stress relief, and so that is another way to do that, in addition to putting iron castings outdoors for aging. .

    Strictly IC ISSUE 37

I would encourage Paul Knapp to forget about everything else, and republish the magazine. Do it for the hobby. Let that be the legacy. It would be greatly appreciated by those of us trying to preserve the model engine hobby. .

    Shows keep getting smaller!

I was alarmed at the age of most of the group that was showing at the 2019 NAMES show. Unfortunately I think we are at the end of an era. Times are changing dramatically. We are definitely not in Kansas anymore. Edit: I have tried to resurrect the foundry/casting part of the hobby. I had the...

    2024 Indiana model engine show

I tried to go, but I have to travel to a wedding in a few weeks, and could not afford two trips in one month. I would like to try and attend next year. .

    Annealing gray iron castings

I have consulted "The Book" (that is what I call it), page 179 (index attached). The Holy Grail of castironism, so to speak. Be back shortly. . Edit: Annealing generally reduces the grade level of gray iron one level, ie: if starting with Class 40 gray iron, it will be slightly less strong...

Billet cylinder head design for cg 125. ..HELP..

Seems like it would be easier to cast that piece, due to the fins and the small webs between the fins. Here is a example of someone in California who cast their own motorcycle racing engine parts, and successfully raced with them...

    Sold Stuart "Williamson" Casting Set

That looks like a nice casting kit ! I found this information online. The accuracy of this information is not guaranteed; please verify all info with the Stuart company, and also verify with the seller above. Stuart- Williamson Vertical Steam Engine Casting Kit. The original engine was 8'-4"...

Bad idea to remelt aluminium swarf.

Some folks just want to experiment with melting and casting aluminum, and I think they are not really serious about anything other than making ingots. There are some who seem to generally only make ingots, and other such things, such as this person: He has a great time with it, and is a 1.48M...

    Slicer scaling issues

When I started to learn how to make castings, I tried Petrobond (tm), which is an oil-based foundry sand, and had some success with it, but I found it did not stand up to iron temperatures very well. I also tried traditional water-based greensand, and it resulted in the worst surface finish I...

    Slicer scaling issues

For 3D printing patterns, I have been scaling the part in the Prusa slicer, and have not yet noticed any problems. I add the appropriate shrinkage factor (a scale factor of about 1.015), add machining allowances to the surfaces that will be machined, and make sure I have draft angle in the...

    Slicer scaling issues

I have not heard of this issue before. I will have to do some experimentation. Generally I close holes in patterns when I 3D print them. .

    P.M. Research #5 Steam Engine

I leave my gray iron castings in the sand overnight, and let them cool as slow as possible (as Jason mentions about slow cooling of iron). Using the correct amount of ferrosilicon during the casting process is also important to avoid the chill spots. Chilled iron has the same characteristics as...
