Merryweather Fire King - a novice build

Amazing Bob! From the chain drive to the side mounted suction, spoked wheels to the fire box, a spectacular representation on 19th century firefighting apparatus. Thanks so much for taking us along on your extensive build and congratulations on a most excellent model. I, for one, look forward...

Miniature Tunnel Ram on Demon V8

I love to use the silicon bronze filler. It is perfect for joining non-similar metals, and great for repairing cast iron! I needed an adapter for my irrigation pump (cast steel of unknown parentage) to a Navy brass fitting. I was about to get out the oxy-acetylene setup and the brass filler...

Miniature Tunnel Ram on Demon V8

You are absolutely correct in your appraisal of the difficulties of tig welding aluminum. I did a 12 week U.S. Navy TIG welding school waaay back when and still have the touch, but just once forget to make everything really clean because “it’s just a quick touch up”, and good old aluminum oxide...

DIY Tool Post Grinder for Quick Change Tool Post

Nice work Lloyd! I use a similar setup with a flexible shaft hooked up to an older dremel for very fine work, the shaft is a perfect fit in my AXA boring bar holder and is more accurate than the older die grinder (worn bearings) I have that’s set up in another tool holder. You didn’t explain...

    4140 pre-hard

Thanks Lloyd, I’ll give the 1144 a look, and you’re right about Van’s. I’ve been using it for 20 years, and when applied to a warm piece in a dip tank (usually an appropriately sized piece of capped PVC pipe), the finish is as good as my typical hot water rust blue process, although probably...

    4140 pre-hard

Welcome to AZ Rocketman! I live in Camp Verde, just about the halfway point between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Thanks for the tip on Tennessee Die Supply, I’ll look them up next time I’m shopping. I have a local scrap yard, but they’re stocked with lots and lots of mystery metal, so no hope...

    4140 pre-hard

The darn things go for $50! I thought, it looks like quite a few different setups, but what the hell, let’s do it!

    4140 pre-hard

Thanks for the education Stan, no explanation, no matter how lengthy is wasted on me! You’re right, I am making a small part for a pistol that’ll need some decent wear resistance. It’ll be a locking block for a Glock 19, and yes, I know I can just buy one, but where’s the fun in that! John W

    4140 pre-hard

I must’ve selected the wrong material when I ordered it. These were both by the same seller, and I meant to order the 4140 HT. As for the price, the D2 is slightly cheaper from this vendor. Thanks to all! John W

    4140 pre-hard

Thanks for the quick reply. I included a typo in my original request in that I typed A2 but I meant D2. Still not 4140 HT though I guess… Thanks again! John W

    4140 pre-hard

I hope this is the right portion of the forum for my post, if not, please forgive me! I had a need for 4140 pre-hard and thought I had found a chunk on eBay, at least that’s what they listed it as. I’m quite a newbie when it comes to steel composition, and when the piece arrived, it is marked...

    Hardening with Kasenit - advice?

Actually, cyanide bound to the various salts are indeed stable as you’ve stated, but once their pH is reduced, they liberate cyanide as a gas that is indeed very toxic. It has a high affinity for the iron bound in your mitochondria, effectively shutting down cellular energy production and...

Downfeed Handle for the Sieg X2 aka Harbor Freight 44991 Mini Mill

I found a very interesting addition for my HF Mini Mill that's especially useful. It is a crank handle to be used on the fine downfeed when boring, and is all 3D printed, making it cheap and easy for anyone with an FDM printer. The initial G Code was ginned up for a Prusa printer, and as I...

    My Little Donkey

That’s a really smooth running engine! The flywheel runs perfectly, and pump looks like it has impressive pressure. I like your “fuzzy” math for imperial to metric conversion while scaling. Many times I’m faced with conversions in the other direction, and I agree, it’s difficult to maintain...

    1/3 Scale Ford 289 Hi-Po

And we’re off and running on another terrific season of “What fantastic creation will Terry make next?” I’m already addicted to this season’s episodes!!! Thanks Terry, John W

    289/302 Ford V-8 enginee

I wrestled with PETG also George, but I’m now getting prints that’re stronger and better than my PLA prints. I changed a few parameters such as bed temp, nozzle temp, fan speeds, and retraction speeds and distances and now they’re coming out beautifully. I even got rid of the dreaded...

    Next Project

Wow, wow, wow, and WOW! Amazing bit of work, and I’ll bet the crankshaft and camshaft were no joy to produce either! Biggest damn model engine I think I’ve ever seen!!!! Thanks for sharing, John W
