Aluminum Sand Casting a Motorcycle Engine

A very interesting video. If I build a bigger furnace to melt iron I will use your design. I can buy the brand of oil bound sand here in the UK made by Petrobond, and also a couple of variants made by other companies. Is yours "Petrobond", or a look-a-like?

Aluminum Sand Casting a Motorcycle Engine

Thanks GreenTwin. I will design and 3D print a split core box that holds about 100g of sand and start the experiment. I can't get too involved at the moment because I have family staying with me. I tried striking my moulds made with epoxy resin too soon and they crumbled. Left too long to harden...

Aluminum Sand Casting a Motorcycle Engine

A search of the web shows that propylene carbonate is sold as a nail polish remover here in the UK. I don't know, yet, if it used elsewhere, but I will keep looking. I have to get some shopping tomorrow, so I will buy a jar of nail polish remover to try with my sodium silicate and some fine dry...

Aluminum Sand Casting a Motorcycle Engine

Thanks JasonB, I have made lots of mistakes with the correct mix of ss to sand, and then too much Co2. I would prefer a catalyst such as GreenTwin mentions. The sand cores I made with epoxy resin were very nice, and very strong, but the cores needed a full day to harden. Thanks to you too...

Aluminum Sand Casting a Motorcycle Engine

Many thanks for the reply. It has given me the information I need to start looking for UK based alternatives. The main problem for us is that there doesn't seem to be many companies who will sell small quantities to hobbiests. I contacted a company a year or so ago about buying materials from...

Aluminum Sand Casting a Motorcycle Engine

I sent an email to a metal casting company asking them what made up the resin bound sand they used to cast parts in iron, namely a Ranalah English wheeling machine. I didn't get a reply, so I am still in the dark. I know there are various types of resin bound sand, and I have used an epoxy resin...

    Beginner to melting iron.

I would like to try melting iron one day, but at the moment I will stay with aluminium. When I was given a Renault wheel to melt I first had to burn off the paint on it. I had a pit dug in the garden ready for a pond, so I used that. I built a small fire with scraps of wood (I had cut the wheel...

    Melting aluminium sheet metal comparison.

I think my failure to get good results from car wheels was more down to me than the metal. I have felt for a while that my foundry isn't getting up to temp as well as it should. A Mk2 is on the "long winded" drawing board. Swdweeb posted a video on youtube recently describing how to weigh a...

    Melting aluminium sheet metal comparison.

It would be interesting to see how much an order for the minimum amount of ingots would be, and who would be interested in buying them. I think most casters are happy to use car wheels, or other aluminium car parts.

    Melting aluminium sheet metal comparison.

Getting "proper" aluminium ingots is very difficult, unless you buy dozens of kilo's. I haven't found a reputable supplier of LM25, but I can buy ZL12. Other casters use car wheels. I have been advised not to. Apparently a car wheel is made by die casting and is a different type of aluminium to...

    Melting aluminium sheet metal comparison.

If I want any sort of aluminium ingot here in Cornwall, I have to send for it. Very expensive to buy and post. If it was only for decorative items, such as a small picture frame I cast last year, I would use any source of available scrap. The picture frame was cast using a scrap Austin Seven...

    Diesel engine : Kromhout Gardner 4LW 1940

I bought an Isetta buble car once with a blown head gasket. Another owner suggested making a gasket from a thin sheet of aluminium that was then annealed to soften it. I didn't know what I was doing so I never got it to work. You might.

    Prusa XL 3D Printer

As long as resin doesn't "pool" in the part, it should be ok. If the tube is capped on the end that will enter the resin tray first, it will act as a plunger would, and possibly cause disruption to the print, or sometimes, damage to the LCD screen. A hole in it would stop that happening. Others...

What have you been doing today?

Steamchick. My youngest sister stayed with me several weeks ago and when she phoned me yesterday she said that they told me about leaving the presents under the table. Now, I don't know why she would make up a story like that, but she did. The others are keeping shtum. Another day, another year...

What have you been doing today?

Today started as an ordinary day. Did a bit of shopping, took a friend to her friends house etc. This evening I sat down to watch a Red Dwarf dvd. Watched the dvd, and decided to do a bit of work on my model car. Turned the telly off, turned round and saw some stuff on the little side table...

That flywheel looks the biz! The engine has really come along quickly. Is that all you do all day, or do you stop to eat and sleep? Looking forward to the first start.
