    Swashplate Engine

After putting in too much time designing a stationary engine using Walscheart's valve gear, I was never able to get it looking like I had envisioned. So, I dropped the idea for now and went back to an idea I started years ago: An axial engine using a swashplate as the crankshaft. Looking on...

    Engine Valves

Being that four stroke engines still seem to elude me, I made some new cams, replaced the poppet valves back to the original spool valves, and turned the machine into an air motor. It'll get painted eventually, but I just couldn't put this on the Shelf of Shame. I just have too much money...

    Walschaerts Mechanism

That is very cool! Good to keep for reference and initial designs. It'll be a great assistance in designing these mechanisms. Thanks!!!

    Walschaerts Mechanism

Right you are. After I work out the details based on the locomotive CAD model I downloaded, I'll need to modify the design to accommodate the reversing portion. This design is going to take some time....

    Walschaerts Mechanism

No valve yet. It's very early in the design. No cylinder yet either....

    Walschaerts Mechanism

On these other engines was the valve gear a Walschaerts (or one of its derivatives) or was it the Stephenson's reversing valve gear which used two eccentrics? From Wikipedia: Stephenson valve gear - Wikipedia

    Walschaerts Mechanism

I've always been fascinated by the valve gear of the later steam locomotives. The fact that is works with only levers and no eccentric is amazing to me. A little bit of research and I found the mechanism was originally designed by Belgian Egide Walschaerts in 1844. (Wikipedia page here.) Over...

    T-Head Engine Plans

When it comes to the castings, just assume any mating surface is a machined surface. Therefore a mating surface in the casting is undersized. For this engine, I didn't use any cores in the castings. ...Ved.

    T-Head Engine Plans

Thank you all for the encouragement. As I wrote earlier, I built the engine and failed. I was never able to get my valves to seal. I don't think it's the design, I think I just suck. For those that question the long valve lifters, I did have a problem with alignment. That's why I added the...

    The great O ring discussion

Oh hell, not again. This hobby is dying. Why make the barrier to entry more difficult by criticizing how people make their engines? The whole "you're doing it wrong" does nothing but push people away. So what if someone wants to use sealing method over another? Give it up.

    Engine Valves

I give in. This engine has defeated me. I started with spool valves. I redesigned to poppet valves. I made the poppet valves and cages again. Hell, I trying to get a single fire and I'm using ether (starting fluid) as a fuel. No luck. The plans for the engine (with 3D solid models) are...

    T-Head Engine Plans

Ok, For me, this engine was a failure. I just couldn't get the valves to seal worth a damn. I don't necessarily think it's in the design, I think it's because I suck., So in the following few posts, I present the design for this four stroke engine. If anybody tackles this thing and is...
