    Engine Valves

Yeah, I did that. I also took the head and with the valve(s) and valve guide(s). Spring loaded them from the rear and turned them in the lathe to lap the valves. That's how I got the very smooth finish on the actual mating surfaces. (I think I just suck.)

    Engine Valves

Thus far all my attempts have failed. I've redesigned the engine for poppets and made the valves and vale guides twice. My second try I get a bit less valve leakage, but no engine run. Not even a single fire with ether as a fuel. (Yes I have spark). I have no compression. I can turn the...

Looking for a good way to learn solidworks

I've been using professional CAD for 25+ years now. I've used Intergraph EMS, Solid Edge, Solidworks, Autodesk Inventory. I've played with Alibre and FreeCAD. They all have different workflows but in some ways are also similar. I recommend to just do the early, built in, SW tutorials. Don't...

How can I find a good home for my father's steam engine

I don't know if they have any money, but Carillon Park in Dayton, Ohio has a model steam railroad. http://www.cprss.org/

What to charge to thread a rod

David, Go to misumi.com. It's a Japanese company with a US distribution. You can purchased customized machined parts from then and the prices for the custom part is right on the configuration page. I'm my profession, I use them frequently. In your situation, I'd configure 24 rods without...

    2021 Names Show Cancelled!

Somehow I respect cancelling an event more than making it "virtual". I spend enough time in front of a screen. ...Ved.

    hauling a small mill

I recommend to rent a low slung trailer. The less you have to lift, the better. You can then also rent an engine hoist ("cherry picker") to get it off the floor and onto the trailer. You can then use binding chains to keep it upright during travel.

    Ream or bore?

Honestly, for practical purposes, it really doesn't matter. This engine is so forgiving you'll have a runner with either method. ...Ved.

First Test of a DIY Steam Turbine running off a 4" Copper MSM Boiler.

Good looking turbine. May I suggest using Kynar tubing for a plastic steam line. It's good to 400 deg F. Granted, it's not the cheapest plastic tubing around, but you'll know that it'll handle the heat. ...Ved.

    Engine Valves

Thanks Teeleeves. As I've written before, I had such a bad experience with my failed Webster that I went with this spool valve concept. I tried several times to make the Webster valves with no luck sealing. I knew the route I took on this design was risky, but it's more within my skill set...

    Medium sized monotube boiler

(Yeah, this thread is quite old) My boiler is of monotube design. A couple of notes: 1. The water inlet should have a check valve to prevent any steam back flow. 2. You must have a pressure relief valve. Mine is set to 100 psi. Have a pressure gauge as well. 3. A monotube boiler doesn't...

    Engine Valves

Well, now I know spool valves don't work for an IC engine. I got no compression. I guess I need to redesign the head and try conventional poppet valves. ...Ved.

    5 stroke engine

Gas laws and steam tables are still in effect here, but I doubt the ideal gas law works. Maybe I'm underthinking it, but an engine's cooling system is there to remove excess heat that would otherwise damage components. If that heat went into vaporizing water, then the water vapor (steam) could...

    5 stroke engine

As I wrote earlier, some WWII aircraft engines used water injection to get a power boost when needed (e.g. take off, dog chasing, etc). Some of the points here are valid and injecting too much water can have detrimental effects on power by absorbing too much heat. As far as my feeble mind...

    5 stroke engine

I was continuing to think about this engine that GG created. First of all sir, congrats on such a cool design and without any plans! So what I say isn't any type if criticism on your work, I'm just pondering ways of making engines more thermally efficient. There's a company that's working on...

    5 stroke engine

The five stroke engine is an old idea made new again. In the steam era, it was called compounding with high and low pressure cylinders. Also in the steam era, it was done with a single cylinder and called early cut off. Corliss engines did this. Early cut off was also used in the internal...

    V4 Oscillator Motor

Yeah, anything with a substantial amount of copper in it is stupid expensive. 360 brass is my favorite material to work with, but that makes an engine very pricey. ...Ved.

My Way two cylinder steam engine

Very nice design. I like how you have the guide rods working double duty as stands for the cylinder body. As for boilers. may I recommend you go the water tube route. It's far safer than a fire tube. The water under pressure is far less and the outer housing acts as a shield if there is...

    Engine Valves

I machined the base casting and assembled the bottom end (minus the piston). Overall, not bad, but I will need to rethink the connecting rod. My earlier connecting rod design from my Sun-Planet engine (Contessa) worked quite well. I may have to do something similar here.
