    My Brothers Engines

your brother is also an artist. on the 2-4-0 loco (LBSC's Petrolea I would bet), do the various shades of brass come frome a particular treatment ? the general aspect is awsome.

My first 4 stroke engine runs, but blows trough the carb !

hi, the stiffness of the valve springs is something that is difficult to assess, I've tried several springs, and each time I change for a harder one, I will continue in this direction...simple to change timing is now not so simple since I have pinned the gear to the camshaft, I can change by one...

My first 4 stroke engine runs, but blows trough the carb !

Thanks for comments ! looking at the actual valve opening diagram on my engine, it is rather close to the angle value generally acepted, and indeed admission closes after BDC, as is the case for a hudge number of 4 stoke engine, which do not backfire ! there is something here that I dont get ...

My first 4 stroke engine runs, but blows trough the carb !

Hi This is my first 4 stroke gas engine, a 10cm3 (0.65ci), that I have build in the last 4 months. In the picture, my engine wears his first carb, ready for a glow run, but now, he is fitted with a true sparkplug, HT coil and breaker points, and burns car gas. I started with cheap alloy...

    Flywheel

large drill bits often do that in brass or bronze, it could be pretty dangerous. you have to set cutting angle to 0° with a stone. most probably, yours drill bit (twist drill) is now twisted after that, roll it on a surface plate to check.

    Drilling tiny holes

for such a small size you need a perfect concentricityin your lathe setup, a good light, and a magnifier. I did it exactly for the same aim, butane burner jets, so it's possible. 0.2 mm drills can be found in the trade but pretty expensive and do not expect to drill more than a length of 0.5...

    Vakuum Motor (Flame Licker)

Hi the PDF used comes from a scanned magazine or a book, and therefore requires an OCR treatment ( if the resolution of the images is sufficient) to get a text (in German) that can be translated by the internet tools. No OCR : no text. This is only for the text of the Dr Bachmann paper, for the...

Help Me Please I've Lost the Link.

Hi it could be the program of AJ Munday "ModelEngineerUtilities" you can find here http://www.colinusher.info/Software/Model%20Engineers%20Utilities.html yes, it does everything, and pretty well, very useful stuff. Zephyrin

Found this 0.1CC Micro Diesel engine

Years ago I did this one, Nano, a 0.10 cm3 "diesel engine", by Richard. Gordon, in a pullout supplement in Model Engineer, vol 169, p 566 N°3932. could be pulled out from copy you may find. A poor runner in my hands, and too light for a paperweight but of course not not a clue for a poor design...

Simple Spinning Project A Bowman burner

great post, really informative. It looks so easy...as shown. I have to try it for my little loco boilers. Thanks for the lesson Zephyrin

    Rehardening drill rod

Hi when heating or reheating, don't overdo it, carrot red is enough, if you heat with a gas torch, it is very easy to burn all the carbon content of this nice piece of tool steel, and to obtain in the end a useless piece of iron ! cheers

Gordon Nano 0.1-cc crank timing issue on drawings

Hi I did this engine years ago. in my annotated plan I noted that the correct figure for the angle was 47°, (hence the 0.8mm) it is also visible in the drawing of the crankshaft, figure 4. I dont know how the 43° comes here. In my hand it was a poor runner, BTW, requiring a new piston for each...

    Split Eccentric

hi, if one of your crankshaft web is circular, you can use it as an eccentric. of course in this case you dont have the choice of the eccentric angle, and AFIK the only compatible valve gear being the Hackworth one. I did that years ago with a tiny 0 gauge loco, 25 mm between frame for 2...

Stuart D10 bedplate- cast iron or granite?!

hi, you should try to get a replacement part in Stuart, they are generally commercially understanding, if not and because you love file, I suggest that could file the piece with a cheap diamond needle file, usually very biting, or with the dremel and diamond grinding wheels. I did this model...

    Fire eater rescue help

hi, your are running the engine in the wrong direction in the video ! if you run the engine in the direction you do it in the video, then the valve should open say 30° before tdc, and stays open to suck flame during most of the "downward" travel of the piston, and the port should be already...

    Drill bit keeps wandering!

Hi, I made for myself a small tool for this purpose, it take a few seconds with a dremel. it is a kind of tiny coned (around 60°) D-bit with a gramophone needle. I put it in a punch mark, give it a twist to remove the raised burr by the punch, I can easily correct the position of the spot on the...

    Diagonal paddle engine

John, I agree with you, fully. I like very much those ETW designs, with ornated pillars and bellied rods. I did the Vulcan and I still have it, and also the paddle wheels engine. and this thread reminds me my attempts to make these parts, there are about 40 years ago, I even did a tap to cut...

    Diagonal paddle engine

Hi, congratulations for the beautiful model you did. Feathering paddle wheels are really so fascinating to watch. just a point however, it seems that you didnt do the reversing screw as per the ETW drawings ie 3/8 dia, 1/8 pitch, 2 starts square thread and obviously the nut to suit! Why publish...

    annealing copper question(s)

Hi you have to stay in subdued light to easily see the red color of the heated metal (the orange color of carrot actually in dim light). but if you have difficulties to heat your end plate to red, the silver brazing of the boiler looks not doable with your torch. cheers
