    Narex boring facing head

I dont have all these magazines at home, but I took a few pictures of the paper of AJ Lofquist in ME, to show the principle of the boring head, no so sofisticated as the commercial ones, but with a neat facing capacity. the pawl in the facing ring hit the wheel on the feed screw, which advances...

    Narex boring facing head

you can find plans to make your own, and about the same,(not the bulky one for the lathe with the starwheeel !) if you wish, ! In the Model Engineer, serialized in 14 issues between 16 june 89,(3851) to 20 july 90 (3877). The advance mechanism is not that difficult to do : While holding...

Suitable boiler plans for a 1 1/2" bore Stationary Engine

it depends on the type of running you require, an engine doing hard work, or a demo under steam. Just have a go with a small boiler, you will be surprised by the result I would bet. doing a large boiler is a hudge investement, a long job without using your lathe or and mill, too sad...

newbie - simple engine won't run

the air or steam never reach the cylinder, as the steam ports on the stand are too distant from each other; this distance should be slightly greater than the size of the cylinder steam port. when the crankshaft is near 90 ° the admission should communicate with the cylinder port, same for the...

    Bird Feeder

So nice, I will make one, with the one I have, only *** dare use it ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxqzYy5SZCw

Steam Engine build from bits and pieces.

A very nice thread Tony, thanks for sharing this lot of useful tricks. A simple and straightforward way to build models, it looks so easy...

    Problems Making Safety Valve Operate

the hystesis of these valves is difficult to circumvent. but a safety valve is a safety device, which must operate in the event of danger, and not to regulate the pressure, too much steam waste! You have to install a pressure control valve for the gas burner for controlling the heating as a...

    Accurate Edge Finding ??

Not easy to compare, but the feel is the same type that is experienced with the micrometer. the frictional force required to move the head of the edge finder should be comparable to that which one feels by measuring a piece between the micrometer rods to expect a similar precision. the optimal...

    morse taper

I do have MT3 collets, very comfortable with the mill and the lathe, the shortest overhang you can find. for the same reason I also have a MT2 set for the rotary table that I cannot use on the tailstock, no easy to extract, unless you have a small threaded part to fill the gap of the tenon...

new side valve engine fom home made castings

Wow, great start with the castings, nice pictures too, thanks. I did a SV engine last year, smaller , (20 mm bore), it runs now, after I had troubles with the shape of the combustion chamber. Is your plan already finished ?

Calculating compression ratio from differences in volume

you are calculating a volumetric ratio, a true compression ratio requires some thermodynamics in it , depends on temperature etc... I did that by measuring the volume of light oil needed to fill the cylinder head, to cope with the complex shape of this part.

Improving the performance of simple boilers.

Yes, I agree, always the simplest way to resolve points in these theads... According to the usual formula the counterweight equal the weight of the rotating parts (crankpin & conrod big end part) plus half of the weight of alternating ones (piston, gudgeon pin & small end of the conrod). not...

Improving the performance of simple boilers.

This is a very interesting and informative thread, for such a cute launch in the end. Bravo Tony. For me the weakest point in a steam plan is not the boiler, which, as far data on the evaporative capacity are given, compare rather well with a full sized boiler. A miniature boiler can be an...

    V twin Hoglet

start at the first blow, and responds really well to the throttle and advance, superb construction, but as usual, congratulations for this nice runner

    Closed crankcase engines, etcetera---

oil from a small outside tank (pressurized or not) is guided by a piece of tube just above the running conrod head and fall drop after drop (10/min), then by simple splashing reachs all the parts that have a small conduit to drive oil as it is usually designed. Oil sump requires oil rings, yes...

    LBSC's BAT plans

The post rates for books are reduced, usually. I do have the TEE reprint from (?) a poor photocopy for a pretty small but lovely loco and a pleasant reading, with the constant feeling that the job will be wrapped up at the end of the week, but it is not so... In addition, you also have in...

    Reducing engine compression ratio

This is not a compression ratio anyway, this is a volumetric ratio. In addition, compression depends on temperature at TDC and BDC and tight or leaky valves and rings etc. modifiing piston height above gudgeon pin is IMO the simplest way to change this volumetric ratio.

Question on steam cyl slide valves

you may add a small piece of phosphor bronze clinker (ie scrounged from an electrical contact), curved to make a very light spring to press the valve onto the face of the cylinder while putting the valve chess cover. As said above, the valve does not be firmly fixed to the stem, and must have...
