Finishing piston o.d. with toolpost grinder

I just have 1 comment to make, WHY grind a piston to size when you can simply turn it to size Piston to bore clearance is NOT important as the rings if made correctly do all the work. All of my rings have a 2 degree angle with the ring face that is in contact with the bore and the reason for...

    Parting tool chatter

Hi Ian, interesting thoughts, HSS if ground properly is very sharp and requires little HP to make it work. Carbide is never sharp and removes material by shear friction so carbide is great to use when you have unlimited HP. After 60 years I still prefer to use HSS especially if you unstable job...

    12L14 Uses

Personally I use 4340 for all of my cranks... It and be a little difficult sometimes to mach but the trade off is its strength.. 316ss for my valves and LM4 bronze for valve and valve followers..O2 for my cam profiles as it tends to work harden over time...I try to use bronze for valve timing...

WOB. just a quick suggestion re the oil ring....just make the oil ring the same as the compression rings but under the oil ring cut an undercut with your ring parting tool about 0.030 deep and drill some 1mm drain holes.. Did you know that the top compression ring contributes 18% to oil...
