    Silver soldering advice needed

I use hydrochloric acid to remove flux. Takes ten minutes or so but must be washed off repeatedly. This acid is mixed ten parts water to one part acid for a pickle. Will cause rust very quickly on Ferris metals. I once left a small part on a table after pickling without rinsing it off with water...

    Elmer's Grasshopper first run

Nice job Stan, I am working on the same engine myself. Actually I thought I was done until I tried to run it on air.I see by your video I screwed up and hooked up the air to the exhaust instead of the intake. It turns freely, the beam will go down with little air pressure, won't go up. I'll hook...

Cutting small threads on a big lathe

Turn a smaller diameter at the end ,say .060 x .187 long. Bore a hole in round scrap 1/16"x 1/4" long.Chuck this in the tailstock. A drop of oil on the end of your part and you are ready to go. You can part off the excess or leave it on if it does not interfere. Might be better to cut the excess...

can steel/cast iron be silver soldered

Not sure about cast iron but you can hard solder steel. I have hard soldered 1018 and some other steels, except stainless.I use a 10% solution of hydrocloric acid for a pickling solution and standard white flux for ferros metal. The steel has to get red hot, more like orange to my eyes. Then the...

How to use a Conical Edge Finder

The mill is turned off ,the table is moved in the X&Y directions until the edge finder looks right and feels smooth all around. Then raise the tool off the work and turn the mill on.If the tool spins without wobbling the center is established. I use another method when finding centers that have...

    D-bits

Chuck, why isn't air hardening tool steel used more frequently? This is what I have used for D bits and several taps I made. I only have air hardening stock on hand, if water or oil hardening is that much better I'll order some. mike

    adjustable dye

I only use Cleveland dies in the small sizes. They are American made. Though I have to admit I stopped using 0-80 screws where ever possible. I do much better with 1-64. When I broke the last 0-80 tap I had I decided to work around this size if possible. mike

    annealing copper question(s)

First thing, get the copper off the fire brick. It absorbs the heat instead of reflecting it. If you lay the copper on insulating brick you may be able to heat the copper to orange color. Then it is annealed. I bought six or eight bricks from the "Pottery Barn".Cost about $25.00 or so if I recall...

    The Drill Doctor

Small bits and short bits can be sharpened with the Drill doctor. I drilled a #57 drill in one end of a 5/16" x4" scrap round stock. On the other end the hole is #53 drill. On the round side I drilled and tapped 5/44x1/8" set screws to hold the drill. Now the drill bit can be inserted and turned...

    File handles

Make a screw center instead. Will never slip, can be made for numerous sizes by interchanging the screw.Take a sheet metal screw, turn part of it down to a diameter that you can thread with a die. Tap a cylinder of steel, brass whatever for the screw. Loctite the thread in the cylinder.I use screw...

    Cheap piloted tap wrenches

I made a few tap wrenches for the small taps,0-80 2-56 etc. My store bought tap wrenches would not hold the little taps securely. Several tap wrenches had no center hole. I center drilled and bored for the tap . Then bored and tapped one hole, 5-44 for a set screw to secure the tap. Bored cross...

    Lathe benches?

Andrew, I have built 200 + benches in the past, mostly for manufacturing plants that needed heavy duty fabrication benches. Some were built for woodworkers and had vices, tool trays and dog holes. Because you mentioned you have woodworking tools you can make your own similar to what I have made...

    member banned

Tim. A fellow by the name of Don Conner apparently was banned without ever posting. I think he said he just joined lately. He asked for help on a another machist forum, 7x12 or maybe 10x22. Don't recall as I am a member of both. Could you look into this , probably just a mistake. mike
