    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

Thank you for the compliment Vietti! I sandblasted the two crankcase halves and spotted a few areas that could use filling. They are not weak points as they are joined with brazing filler, but cosmetic so I applied some JB weld and set them aside to cure. Plan A to complete the crankcases on...

    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

Good Morning, UPPER CRANKCASE FABRICATION finally cooling off down here in Florida, and can spend more time in the garage. I started the upper crankcase using similar methods as used on the lower half. I chose to braze the camshaft support arms on in the same time rather than "soft solder" them...

    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

The crankcase should end up very rigid doing as you propose using epoxy and using more screws/bolts instead of just single fixturing screws. Glad that you were able to make use of this posting 😁 Silver brazing, soldering and welding is hard to learn but the additive process makes up for some...

Thanks Sprocket. The description you gave makes sense now that I drew it out

    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

Got the lower crankcase brazed together yesterday first i needed to make the bolting flanges and it made sense to make all four parts. Used a 1/4 end mill to make the recess. I purchased a new acetylene and air torch (turbo Torch) to replace my MAPP gas canister setup. I already had two B tanks...

    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

Thank you Doug, Early in the build, but could you describe the valve timing, firing sequence please? Also do you just open the crank doors and squirt oil on the crank, or do you partially fill it and allow windage?

    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

Hello All, I am attempting to build a 1/8 scale replica of an 1898 Nash two cylinder four stroke engine using a beautiful book by Doug Kelley. Doug uses the silver brazed method of fabrication and I needed to improve my skills in that regard. A very well executed 2021 build is logged by...

another Muncaster #9 Joy's Valve Engine, 2/3 scale, bar stock

Hi Peter, very nice job fabricating this engine and I appreciated your help when i was struggling with my build last year. Good to see you have it running smoothly and self starting too! What is the function of the part that is located on the RHS (behind the valve gear in video perspective)? I...

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

Good story, and I do love me some bacon. 😋 While researching this build for details, I saved these pictures that show the oil drippings right where my model has them. Note the variation on the smoke box doors. The first photo is from the local show, Florida Flywheelers. Also read somewhere that...

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

Thank you all for the positive feedback :) I enjoyed sharing the experience as much as building the model. I will probably never build the canopy or letter it. But I like the authentic detail of Olympic's implements, hoses, and extra valves. Hopefully my grandkids will want to see what pops...

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

final images This was a very rewarding project to build as the builder can use materials on hand and detail it to whatever level that they feel comfortable with. I think that the extra wheel spokes were well worth the extra time. I became obsessed with making a working clutch, so that's likely...

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

Denatured alcohol was not available locally, but was able to buy a quart online. I tried several different wick materials that I had with a score of different amounts to alter the fuel/air ratio. Best results with some loose strands of fiberglass wick in the bottom of the barrels, and cotton...

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

Hello everyone, finished the stepladder on the third attempt and mounted it to the running boards. Built a sheet-brass fuel tank per plans and soft soldered the seams using a cooking torch and plumbers solder. It distorted a little, but it was okay as mostly hidden. The burner barrels were hard...

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

Thank you for the compliments and tips Olympic :) Decided to go ahead and make the dummy pressure gauge as you described. The real one is hidden under the firewood as shown in post #85. My subscription to Microsoft expired, but I snagged a great picture online and shrunk it in a free online...

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

Over the last two weekends I figured out the clutch lever and built a throttle and fake reverse lever for the tractor. I wanted a ratchet like feel as I moved the throttle, so came up with a plan as shown. I used the DRO bolt circle function and then sanded down to a scribed line about halfway...

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

thank you Olympic, I should have called out that the 2-3/4 long brass is 1/2" OD tube with two solid brass end caps, (I only drew one). This avoids drilling a long and probably wandering hole for the steam pipe. It could have easily be solid brass though....

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

Hello all, Made up a tupperware bin full of citric acid and dipped the wheels, gears and axle parts prior to a somewhat premature paint job. The thought was that it would really cure and also antique a little as I complete the remaining parts. I chose satin finish Spruce green and Heritage red...

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

Whew it's hot in the garage here in central Florida! Piped the throttle valve to the steam chest and made a steam lubricator. Gave the dome a little more radius also.

Bunker tops and steam dome Chopped and split 1/4096 of a cord of seasoned oak to fill out the fuel bunkers and hide the pressure gauge and fill valve. Looks pretty close to scale :) and they lift out without too much effort, yet stay inside. The firewood is glued to a 1/16" piece of plywood...
