    Shaft won't fit bearing

So it's a bush, not a ball bearing as everyone assumes. 1.5 thou is a LOT of clearance (I'd say sloppy fit) for any ball bearing. Not using vernier calipers to measure by any chance? There seems a lot we are NOT being told here.

Finding a good small cnc cad-cam milling machine in NZ.

Had an old HM32 style mill which was originally made in Taiwan as opposed to China, the quality of the former being much better than the latter even though they appeared to be the same thing. I did a lot of work on this old machine then sold it for pennies to a mate of mine just starting out...

    High pressure pump

Start looking at "gear pump". You can adjust your requirements from there. At least it's a helpful answer, never seen so many "SA" answers.

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

Ah...good to know...thanks for the update. No idea on "upper rev limit" as it was never a consideration. Maybe simply suck it and see. Suffice to say they were originally used on the mini motorcycles from 50cc and up so I'd imagine around 10k wouldn't be out of the ball park. As far as getting...

Thoughts on cooling a model engine with oil instead of water

That's why they use certain types of liquid coolant for many engines such as motorcycles, go-karts, aircraft, snow mobiles on and on. Seems sufficient for them to use. Why try to re-invent the wheel?

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

Apologies for incorrect pcb although they will work fine with the 1 modification above (re-reroute P4 connection) Enclosed here is a re-vamped Gerber design file (with correct connections and also a diode added to the input for protection but only if one desires. Circuit diagram above is as...

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

Hi Jerry, (Bad News) Quick note........ there is an error in the PCB as shown above. (Good News) Easy fix. Where P4 from the CDI black box currently goes to P4 on the pcb......... this is INCORRECT. ( there is a track error) Only noticed it today (8/6/2024) Fix is to take the P4 wire out of...

    End of an (electrical) era

Something amiss if one cannot fit a hall effect and a 3x1mm magnet in somewhere easily. I used to use the Simca points because of their small size before going over to hall effect. There are these I saw on Aliexpress though, look quite compact. No requirement to use metal case condensor...

    Cam Grinder questions / suggestions

The grinder I designed and built mostly from recycled materials and parts from commercial printers (cogs, belts etc.) has served me well for over 15 years now. Had to rebuilt it when the flood came and damaged most things in my workshop but apart from that, it's the same as built originally. I...

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

As above in #202 ...new order arrived and so showing the photos of top and bottom ....these are the "panelized" pcb's ....so 4 pcb's per panel, 5 panels in order. These are slightly larger than the originals from way back when to allow for the larger traces and solder pads.

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

OK...went back to my original drawings and changed the board setup so that only one pcb is made per panel. That will give you 5 pcb's in total and you may need to cut to size I imagine (maybe not, never done it that way) Generated the Gerber File for that as " Version 3 Add On CDI Single" which...

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

That would be 2 rows x 2 columns so "4" pcb's per panel, not 5....then there are 5 panels. So all up 20 pcb's....but at AUD$14 odd cheap as........ I "panalize" the panel so I can get more pcb's for around the same cost. It used to be that "panelize" was free but now a small extra charge...

    Compression ignition

It's still a compression diesel engine with direct injection regardless. Physics just will not allow it to run on your standard pump diesel fuel, I thought that was obvious. Seems there is always at least one knocker, apart from the engine that is.

    Compression ignition

George Punter built this Lester a few years back. Take note of the name as he is a retired secondary school manual arts teacher and winner of the Duke of Edinburgh trophy in the UK so no slouch when it comes to model engineering.

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

As the heading says ...easy and cheap...bugger all to play with and go wrong...anyone can access the parts from anywhere in the world. Can be put together by anyone with any wiring/soldering skills in a few minutes AND guaranteed to work first time, every time. AS it suits the hall effect...

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

Had a call from my mate the renowned Duke of Edinburgh Award winner George Punter yesterday and yet another of his creations now up and running on the modified off-the-shelf CDI system I designed. 1/4" spark plug and all. Said he did the Toyota jump when it first fired up but then he admitted...
