    BA or Metric

That failure is not due to the screw socket ! It is due to the quality that you purchase and is very common with Metric Screws in particular. Metric material standards are all over the Map ( sorry about that, but true !) You can get screws in Din 5.8, Din 8.8, Din 10.9 and Din 12.9 and your...

    spherical shape rubber abrasive?

You can dress the Cratex tips on a pedestal ( bench) grinder to any form you wish Rich

    Spur gear meshing question.

You should be OK, The tooth forms will be a bit off. Commercial gears are slightly smaller than normal FYI You can also make a dummy shaft block that is adjustable to your desired spacing and run in ( Lap) the gears. They will be real smooth then Rich

Scale Model Nuts for Model Steam Engines

A little old maybe , but works great for gaskets is the covers on the old 5 1/4" floppy discs. The paper material is very uniform and consistent. Rich

    Helical gear problems - Help

Just a general question George, is there a relationship between the cutter diameter and the workpiece diameter ? (Ratio?) I can see that a large(r) cutter will wipe more of the tooth walls and tooth form gets wider and your cutters are quite small.

Free plans for a larger, simpler, beam engine

Thank You Larry for the post My recently updated ( 4 months) and improved website is here http://www.stationarysteam.com/ and for an animated view of Monitor's Piston ( 1861) action go here: http://www.stationarysteam.com/linked/rich_s__monitor_motion_video_from_sw.mp4 And to see an...

    Shrink fit

There is always a concern about getting the Aluminum part Too Hot a easy thing to do is to make a mark on the part with Magic Marker When heated to 400-450 F the mark goes transparent so you know you are 300-350 F over ambient temp (room, temp) for your calculations In this case, a 1.000 hole...

    Hypocycloidal Engine

Matthew Murray of Leeds is the originator of the Hypocycloidal Steam Engine He did it mostly to bypass Watt's patent on Parallel Motion on Beam Engines. It eliminated the need for a Beam which was a huge weight and cost savings. Murray also invented the short stroke "D" valve which we use...

    Print reading question

Nealeb, your quote in post 64 " Maybe there is a production engineering stage between designer and machinist who makes these decisions, and might even ask for specific relevant dimensions on the drawings to suit the local ways of working " is spot on ! I am a retired Manufacturing Engineer Not...

    Gear cutting

I think the Bevel gear calculations ( sheet) were published before Laws book, in Model Engineer in Oct 1991 by Mr Lammas The Calculations are relatively easy for bevel gears , but it does take 3 x longer compared to spur gears as each gullet requires 3 passes. Rich

    Reverse Tumbler Bearings

Edit I should add that "IF" your bronze bushings are worn, then you do get increased gear noise, but that is fixed by rebushing the gear. Put a indicator on the gear tooth and see if you have more than .001" movement, if so, then it needs rebushing . Any gear on the gear train should have no...

    Reverse Tumbler Bearings

John Forget about gears for a moment think about a Lathe without gears and only the headstock spindle Lathes with spindles in plain Bearings (bronze ie) are always quieter than spindles running in either ball or roller bearings . The bronze absorbs vibration where as steel may amplify the...

Would Appreciate some advice on "Electric Furnaces"

Elmer Wall Inline four cylinder plans

There was a publication in 1954 called "Model Craft Handbook" It was a special booklet published be Science and Mechanics , a magazine much like Popular mechanics, but they went out of business later in the decade I believe. Anyway, the book has a full article on building the Wall 4 cylinder...

vacuum for use on a lathe

I made a 20 gallon grease drum into a centrifuge in the center of my shop and have a 5 gallon Sears vac (30 yrs old) outside with my suction line under the floor to the centrifuge. I pick up all chips, lathe and mill. I have a coffee can of wood blocks and when picking up string chips, throw...

    Rotary Table Alignment

Discussing vises is a good way to start arguments I have had a 5 inch Kurt in my shop for 43 years and it is as close to perfect as they come. I was given a 4 inch Kurt imitation made in India and it was a piece of garbage. Took about 30 hours of rework to get it square and flat. I would say 60...

    Rotary Table Alignment

You do not need a centerdrill. Centerdrills are for making centers in a shaft in order to use a live or dead center, but it's "convenient" for some to use for drilling, but sometimes even centerdrills are off . Also they are 60 degrees and not 118 like a drill. Do what machinists have done for...

    Rotary Table Alignment

Why would you want to do 3 and 12? Speed , is the essence of working on setups. Setups do not pay bills, so in most all machine shops , it's the tricks of the trade that can make a job profitable or not. Fixing Nod is a pain in the butt for most machinists, as evidenced by your purchase of a...
