    4 jaw Bernerd 34M for Myford 7

It's an excellent chuck and the threaded body cuts down on overhang , like it says it was designed for use with Myford ML7 and Super7 lathes which are very popular in the UK. Could be problematic though not impossible to fit to another make of lathe Dan.

Twin aero CI/diesel - some advice needed

Actually the idea that clearance is necessary is incorrect , the manufacturer of Easyflo (Johnson&Matthey) used to run an ad where a 1" dia bar was inserted into a 1" reamed hole in a steel plate then silver soldered. The assembly was then cut in half along the axis of the bar to show that the...

Twin aero CI/diesel - some advice needed

Silver soldering is very strong and certainly good enough for a model crank , I make my single throw cranks by this method and you would have to destroy one to get it apart. Dan

    Shop Vac Question

Melting aluminium turnings/chips will be a waste of time , the very large surface area results in heavy losses due to oxidation . If you want to do some casting you can find cast aluminium engine parts quite easily. Dan.

    Spiral bevel gears n gearing

mrehmus Just to make a point I said in my first reply to this post that it might be possible to get a gear pattern printed in wax , possibly by a jeweller. Having run my own lost wax buisness for over 25 years I feel somewhat qualified to say this. I went on to say that it might be possible to...

    Spiral bevel gears n gearing

I agree that machined finish is prefered , even commercial manufacturers of spiral bevel gears have difficulty with a ground finish but I assumed that we are talking model size and reproducing the appearance rather than the performance. investment cast gears do work and can be improved by...

    Spiral bevel gears n gearing

Even making correctly shaped straight bevel gears is not so easy. If you have a 3D CAD package you could perhaps produce a drawing and STL file of your gear requirements, if the gears are small there are several firms in the UK that could print your gear in wax at a reasonable price for use as...

    Ford 300 Inline Six

Thanks for the link but like I said "currently unavailable". Powder coating on a scale model would obliterate fine detail unfortunately , I guess I will have to stick with 2 pack acrylic ! Dan.

    Ford 300 Inline Six

Love this build ! few tears ago my bro and I fitted this engine into his 2 door mk3 Cortina. Had to cut a bit off the sump to get it to fit nicely. The result was hair raising ...............void bushes lasted a day lol. Unfortunately Gun Kote doesn't appear to be readily available in the UK , I...

    Lost PLA processes, products, knowledge.

I have a controller made by Vertex , it uses fuzzy logic to control temperature to within 2 deg centigrade and can be easily programmed for multi-step process. It can be loaded with more than one program so the kiln could be used for burn-out and heat-treatment by selecting the relevant...

    Lost PLA processes, products, knowledge.

Sorry Rich but we closed the website down , it was being hosted on a pal's PC but there was so many attempts at hacking - thousands per day - that he decided to shut it down. I have been renovating my house for some time now and have had very little time for model making or casting but a few...

    Melting chromed-brass bathroom fittings

Over the years I have used many chrome plated brass bathroom fittings in my brass castings and the only detrimental effect that I have noticed has come to light during polishing. In one casting I exposed almost a tiny mountain ridge of hard spots , the surrounding metal was removed by the mop...

    Model sized nuts

Finding the correct steel hex stock for small scale nuts and bolts is becoming difficult because mills no longer produce the exact sizes , you could try hex socket keys , anneal them and use the steel. As already said the BA range will provide most scale requirements but even these are becoming...

Is there something like lost wax?

You will see from the video accessed from the above link that the polycast prints are being used in ceramic shell moulds and burnt out at a very high temperature . Block moulds , using plaster based investment , are much more suited to home hobby lost-wax workshops and I have had many years...

Is there something like lost wax?

Not quite sure what you are asking , wax patterns can be printed for use in the lost wax process and there are some plastics that can be printed and burnt out in a similar way to lost wax , not sure how good they are as I only use wax. Wax printers are still rather expensive and not for the...

    Piston material choice.

I use brass pistons with brass cylinders in my G1 steam locomotives , and Viton "O"rings. I have also experimented with back to back cast iron rings , these work very well and overcome the "stick/slip" problem encountered with the "O"rings. However machining and fitting such small (1/2 " bore)...

Help: Looking for a steam engine forum

Model Boilers with the exception of very large models , are made from copper , even TIG welded copper is questioned in the UK. The copper must be of the "oxygen free" variety and special rods are required for TIG. The world of model steam is marred by the regulators nowadays. For very low...
