    Home Brew Bronze alloys

A well known supplier of foundry chemicals and sundries is UK based (probably multi-national now) Foseco Ltd. Their factory/warehouse is not far from me and when I started serious foundry work I purchased all of my requirements from them. For brass melting and grain refining they recommended...

    Home Brew Bronze alloys

Obviously you do what you think best for your situation but I have plumbago crucibles that have done more than 100 melts using this flux that show no signs of degradation. If you have a gooey mess than you are not hot enough , the flux will be very liquid at the correct heat and require a little...

    Home Brew Bronze alloys

I have made many kilos of gun metal ( red brass in the US) to the 85-5-5-5 recipe. This is an ideal alloy for steam engine castings. I melt the copper first under a flux cover then add the tin followed by the lead , I add the zinc in the form of brass bar (60/40). I pour at around 1100°C after...

Selecting a Variable Speed Motor for Test Set-Ups

Look on the Bangood website , they have DC motors with control units very cheap. I bought a 500 watt motor for my instrument lathe for about £50 including the speed controller. Dan.

Injected Diesel 56cc 2 Stroke, Will it ever work?"

In the UK a very large textile company also made spinnerets in a restricted area , this was because they were made from platinum and liable to be stolen. Dan.

    question about aluminum shrinkage

Too much confusion being talked here , the shrinkage is the difference between the size of the pattern and the cooled casting . I have made aluminium castings for a company that produces extruded sections, these were right angle joining pieces and needed to be VERY accurate. I have also cast...

    Home Foundry

If you are hoping to eventually cast something as complex as the above manifold then forget sand moulding , investment casting is the way to go. Although some extra equipment is required and the process costs more , the learning curve is far less steep and results are easily achieved which far...

Do train locomotive components for G scale live steam exist today?

I have many parts in stock for gauge one engines , mostly based on designs by LBSC for his Dianna and Dot. I am building a batch of British southern region Merchant Navy class and have laser cut steelwork and most other parts. Many of the parts are interchangeable and could be used to build...

    Next Project

Mallory park circuit 1967, I was lucky to see and hear that bike in the race of the year , it was ridden by Mike Hailwood and he beat his old team MV Agusta with Giacomo Agostini riding the 500, It was a day to remember as sadly world champion sidecar rider Fritz Scheidegger was killed earlier...

    Who knows this locomobile

Not sure of the manufacturer but it looks like an agricultural engine . These were made by several companies in the UK including Fosters Rustons and Garretts, and many overseas They were usually pulled by horses to the working site and then used to power such machinery as grain threshers etc...

    Casting kit business?

The photo is of the castings , not the patterns,it's a complete set less the wheels for a gauge 1 loco. I mainly produced bronze sculptures for an accomplished dog and horse sculptor but also fashion work for Vivienne Westwood and for David Shepherd. I found it hard to get any large scale...

    Casting kit business?

I am having difficulty understanding your last post darwenguy "i get it to around £6 per aluminium and £15 per bronze mold in cost." Do you mean that each mould costs that price for Petrobond? Petrobond IS a use once only material , a thin layer should be applied by sieve to cover the pattern ...

    Casting kit business?

"You can send your 3D model to the foundry over the internet in the morning, and have a very complex gray iron casting sitting on your desk that afternoon. I am not aware of any other casting process that is this fast or flexible." I agree that wonderful things are happening through technology...

Machining tools for a micro lathe.

I re-purpose broken HSS slitting saws into parting off tools. They can be cut into strips with a cutting disc in an angle grinder. I made a holder which fits in a rear toolpost , perfect for parting brass with minimum waste , and can be used for piston ring grooves etc. Dan.

    Mystery Brass

Might be aluminium bronze , if so it will show a very slight attraction to a magnet. If it is AB then it cuts easily with new sharp tools but is almost impossible with slightly dull ones. Dan.
