    Hand cramping and arthritis

Perhaps we should design a home flour mill , something like a hammer mill would be fairly easy but a motorised mortar and pestle would require more machining capacity than I possess . Just pipe dreaming , I doubt that changing my diet after all those years would do much but I am trying the...

    Hand cramping and arthritis

Thank you ! This could be one of the most useful posts yet , at 76 I also suffer badly from hand cramps and often have to give up work after an hour. As a type 2 diabetic I have found that eating even a small amount of chocolate also seems to cause cramps too , so I guess I will be trying the...

How I store waste oil for my burner.

Same problem with non-ferrous casting , steel tools will dissolve , even in aluminium. A fireclay wash applied to the tools will prevent this. I often wonder how many of the guys using tin cans or welded steel pipe as crucibles get by without a mishap. Dan.

    Looking for cast iron bars

But some stuff you just gotta make it , even if it's just to see if you can. Dan.

    Mould and core washes

"Of course you can always just use 100% petrobond for the entire mold, but for large molds, that could require a lot of petrobond." I guess that the cost of petrobond sand (about £4 per kilo) is nothing to our wealthy US cousins . Here in the UK we are much more frugal. The small amount of...

    Looking for cast iron bars

Would you really want to use meehanite? These piston rings are 1/2" od , machined from 1" dia meehanite bar (the grey iron variety). It machines beautifully and is of guaranteed quality, thats why I would use it.

    Looking for cast iron bars

Some engines are cast in aluminium or even magnesium , but most auto engine blocks are made from SG iron , that is spheroidal graphite iron which is a type of cast iron , it is not steel. An engine block that is cast in steel would be very expensive and somewhat overkill.,Where would it be...

    Looking for cast iron bars

You can get 1" meehanite bar in UK from several suppliers , postage should not be too much. Dan.

    Mould and core washes

I haven't done any green sand moulding for many years , once I had discovered lost wax investment casting there was no going back. However I do remember that I used a bottle of CO2 to gas cure my sodium silicate cores , this was very rapid and no catalyst was required. Baking the cores in a...

How not to Do Backyard Metal Casting

And almost no health care either , in a country that has landed a vehicle on the moon ! when Russia failed.

    Silver soldering rod for boiler

Apologies for not reading all of this post but to see 1/8" thick copper quoted for boiler end plates on what amounts to a tiny boiler working at almost no pressure (45 psi) as overkill . Too much negativity can put newcomers off a very rewarding and enjoyable hobby. The casting of metal and...

Babbitt material for Howell V4 oil bushing

Babbitt is not obselete , almost every multi cylinder vehicle engine uses babbitt crankshaft bearings , now it is on steel shells but the bearing metal is still babbitt , or white bearing metal if you prefer. Dan.

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

David the best way to sell your machinery in the UK is to take advice from someone who lives in the UK and knows what the machines are likely to be worth in the UK. The best place to sell online is homeworkshop.org.uk as the sevice is free and there is no commision as with ebay. Currently a very...

Casting bronze in a Buddhist temple

Interesting how some parts of the world ignore health and safety regulations that have taken western workers many years to get enforced. The intense white fumes suggest a high zinc content in the melt which is unusual as bells are normally a roughly 80/20 copper/tin bronze which doesn't fume so...
