    question about aluminum shrinkage

Sorry to mislead but the shrinkage I referred to should have read 7mm to 10mm per metre depending on the alloy. I got carried away with the mixing of medieval and Enlightenment systems of mensuration. By the way in another post someone mentioned shrinkage of 3d printing. In my test pieces and...

    Water Gauges for Boilers.

Hi Tony/Andrew, Just out of intrest I have a mid 19thC (around 1860 ish) workshop .practice book showing two examples of these 'Diamond' type tangential cutting tools. Just goes to show that there is little new in the world of manufacturing until you get major technological shift such as NC...

    NYLON MILLING MACHINE GEARS

Hi jason, Be careful what you wish for when replacing plastic gears with metal. Plastic gears are often used to be sacrificial in the case of machine jamming to protect more expensive damage - rather like shear pins in shafts which are designed to fail before more serious damage is done to a...

    Old lathe conversion

Hi Paul, You are quite right in your assumption about the ways. South Bend- at least on the small lathes and derivatives like my Engish Boxford had 3 'vee' ways and one flat, the saddle runs on two and tailstock on the other and the flat. I have seen the 'vee' ways described as prismatic (as...

    Old lathe conversion

Hi Will, as I mentioned in another reply I worked with a guy who was operating an old converted belt drive lathe and the only marking in the casting was "Austin Motor Company 1904". The Austin Factory was opened in Longbridge in the English Midlands in 1905 so I can only assume that the lathe...

    Old lathe conversion

Hi, If you get the chance, a read of the South bend booklet 'How to Run a Lathe' from 1934 may give you some idea as they were in a period of transition from countershaft drive to individual motor drive and offered lathes with either option with lots of illustrations and pictures on how to set...

    question about aluminum shrinkage

Hi, Depends on the alloy, lm4 can be as little as 2% while lm10 (from memory) is as much as 10%. The 1/8" per 1' (medieval) allowance you mention is for cast iron and it's alloys which has a much smaller shrinkage. TerryD

    question about aluminum shrinkage

Hi, I was involved with casting as an educator at a school level where we used (UK) LM4 alloy and the accepted shrink rate is around 6 - 7% which is what is generally accepted as the ballpark figure for aluminium although some parts of a casting such as thin webs etc may shrink less as they...

    Lead screw nut

Hi djc, the nameplate also shows that it is an Excel lathe made in Coventry in the UK (the original poster is UK based so it is more than likely that it is an actual Ecxel lathe as described here: http://www.lathes.co.uk/excel/ However the saddle and cross slide look a lot like the ones Emco...

    Lead screw nut

Hi Darwenguy, Try the guy who runs this website, he probably won't have spares but he may have some information on the threaad. I haven't dealt with him but many others have and apparently he is a great help most of the time and is very knowledgeable. http://www.lathes.co.uk/excel/ TerryD

    Electric car plant

Wind power contributed 24.8% of UK electricity supplied in 2020, having surpassed coal in 2016 and nuclear in 2018..... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_power_in_the_United_Kingdom

Of course that is simple statistics, But not everyone can be above average in a particular group such as the whole school population of a country which was my point. TDX

    Electric car plant

Hi K2, A similar comment was made by an education minister a few years ago - I forget who it was - who reckoned that the education system was to be improved by his government so that every pupil would be above average! It says something more about politicians than education. TerryD

    Electric car plant

Hi DKG, I was repling to a poster who claimed that calculated costs for electricity for an ev was way above the cost of an ice vehicle. The price of electricity he quoted was out by a factor of 10, i.e. $1.89 instead of $0.189, but in my original post I was embarrased by getting simple...

    Electric car plant

Hi all, I hand my head in shame  and have to apologise as my arithmetic calculation was way out. I said that your charge cost would be $2.87 for your 25 mile ride and represented a cost of around $0.206. I'm shocked that on a forum full of engineers it was not picked up that the cost per...

    Electric car plant

Hi Bentwings, it is estimated that there are around 1.7 million birds killed by wind turbines in the US which represents 0.016% of the bird population in the country. However there are somewhere between 100 million and 1 billion birds killed by flying into glass such as glass skyscrapers every...

    Electric car plant

Hi Davidyat, I should check your figures or chase your electricity suppplier. The average cost of electricity in Canada (where I presume you are as you are railing against that government) was $0.179 in 2021 per kWh so your charge would cost $2.87 and your 25 miles costs around $0.206 per mile...

    Electric car plant

Hi Steamchick, And using a trailing lead across a public footpath is an open invitation for a scammer to trip and have an 'accident' in order to claim damages, and you probably can't insure against that! It's a major problem with terraced housing with no dedicated parking. Even if there were...

    Electric car plant

Hi Lohring, As for home charging many homes in the UK are terraced or flats (small 'apartments') usually with no designated parking places as houses are more expensive here than in the US due to the shortage of building land. In fact almost exactly 50% of our homes are like this. I recently...

    Electric car plant

Hi Hanermo, An interesting read from someone with actual experience. just a couple of questions for someone who lives in a more notherly latitude and putting aside for a moment the climate costs of burning fossil fuels. Firstly you say that the Tesla has a 600km range (Tesla quoted figure)...
