Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

David You are correct. Thats the advantage of eBay. It finds the best price from a vast (well UK) member base and anything large would be picked up. You would always get more if the smaller items could be couriered. From what I have seen I would be expecting in excess of £10,000 for the lot...

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

David That is far far to low. Should be getting over £2000 for the lathe and basic equipment. One like yours recently sold for £2800 - always collected. Let the auction decide! Mike

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

David and the collective Forum I can't identify the small steam engine. I have looked through the Stuart cat and it isn't there - at least not in my copy. It's a nice engine which I haven't seen before - pity about the rust. Mike

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

David It seems to be an impossible task but it is actually not that bad. You are at a disadvantage of not having the familiarity with the tools but that may be overcome. If you would like help then I strongly advise you to create photos of everything. These photos should be on a neutral...

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

David I think it was more than £613. The lathe has a power cross feed fitted (£695) which I don't thing can be fitted after. It also needs the motor. I think when you sell it you will need to be careful to include everything in the description. It has for instance got a 125 to 100 division...

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

Well its still a Super 7B. To add a gearbox to a Super 7 requires the lead screw to be modified or replaced which is exactly how the Super 7b is delivered. There is no part number stamped onto the lathe and there is no reference to the B version anywhere on the lathe. I am on my second Super...

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

David If you purchased a Super 7 from Myford and also ordered a quick change gearbox (which you have) then it is a Super7B part number 10/039. Note that there are 2 versions, the standard 19inch lathe and the long bed 31inch between centres (very uncommon). Both may be ordered with induction...

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

Charles Our postings crossed over - your list is correct but note that if it is a Super7B (with gearbox) there are no changewheels. I think if I were selling the lathe I would include the chucks etc. Mike

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

I agree with Charles Super 7 should come with:- Face plate, 3 jaw chuck and reverse jaws plus key, 4 jaw chuck plus key, lead screw dial, tool holder (the basic clamp style with cutters and the adjusting boat although the Dickson/4 way toolpost would also be ok), motor and reversing switch...

    Machining Valve Stems

DK. I will use the simple method of fabrication and if it doesn't work (distortion?) I'll do it again. I tried to do the deep cut and it needs good rigidity and the correct tool. I don't have a suitable insert and I can't use the type of holder Joe uses on my Myford (easily).

    Machining Valve Stems

I had never heard of George Luhrs. His engines are amassing - truly amassing. Has anyone seen or have any drawings - just a small part - so we can all admire the dimensions he worked to.

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

David Actually it is very quick to annotated the pictures! I attach the official Myford accessory list with drawings. Its dates 1998 so ignore the prices. This should help you identify the items and correctly name them. Please feel free to reach out to the HMEM for additional help. Also...

    Machining Valve Stems

Thanks for that . I have followed Joe for some time but haven't seen this clip before. Unfortunately the tool doesn't seem to be available and I can't identify the insert/supplier. It does show what can be done but I guess there is still the issue of surface finish and final size for fitting...

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

David for the larger items get people to collect. Also make use of companies such as Interparcel who offer very good courier rates (no connection - just a user!) Always remember that the description and decent photos are the key to selling success. Also start low in the auction. For my...

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

.....its not about noticing the holes - its about expecting to find holes!. Quite a lot of the non-Myford (I guess they are now all non-Myford!) chucks have dividing holes especially those from the far east which make up the bulk of the product available. It will be interesting to see the rear...

    Machining Valve Stems

Thanks for that. I usually leave a 0.002 inch gap to allow for the flow. I have Johnson Mathey silver solder and a MAP torch so should work Thanks Mike

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

David It would be very helpful if the items could be removed from the drawers and then photographed. The items I can see are identified in the attached photo but there are clearly other items under the boxes. I would say that the condition of the accessories is excellent and many of the items...

    Machining Valve Stems

Thanks very much for the suggestions. There certainly are a number of diverse methods in use amongst the community. This is my take on the methods and my reasoning: - Several members use the step approach where each step is around 3/8ish. The final finish being via fine abrasive paper. Jason...

    Machining Valve Stems

Please may I tap into the vast knowledge base of the HMEM members? I need to machine the valves of the Kiwi and I can’t formulate a procedure which will give me a 1.5inch long x 0.125dia valve stem which is a good sliding fit into a reamed hole. I’m using silver steel (drill steel). I could...
