    Kiwi piston dimensions

The timing is not correct and it seems to be too stiff. I am using rings which are correctly sized and gapped on a good smooth parallel cylinder. I know the big end bearing is free running and the crank bearings are in-line. So something is not correct which will require a complete...

    Kiwi piston dimensions

Yes I agree. My main aim (and its up for debate) was to make a presentable model to a good standard and if it didn't run I could live with that! Maybe controversial to the purest I guess. I would need to strip the model down and check everything especially the timing and this would likely...

    Kiwi piston dimensions

Hi Guys I have finished the Kiwi and mounted it on a base. A few things to note. The round device under the carb is the flywheel extractor - the flywheel has a taper sleeve and the extractor screws into the flywheel with a central screw to extract. The contacts design was taken from the...

    Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition 2024

So why do you folks think there is the contrast between the UK and US shows (I have not been to a US show). Also is there really a difference in standards of work - and if so any ideas why?

    Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition 2024

Charles Many thanks for the video. You did a great job of showing most of the models and capturing the atmosphere. The really good improvement from last year was the venue lighting. This year you could actually see the models!!! I agree with GreenTwin re the effort in organising the event so...

    Sandblaster!!!

Hi Randoo Its called a metering valve - I call it an air bleed valve. Basically It introduces air into the media to increase the flow. The video shows the working arrangement. I used iron pipe fittings to modify my useless blast cabinet. The video shows a short stub valve for the air inlet...

    Sandblaster!!!

I just fill the cabinet with 10 to 15Kg of media and no issues. I do however have an air bleed into the mixing chamber in the base to ensure a good air flow.

    Cyclone dust collector

Agree with Sparky. I use a domestic Henry which works very well with a Dust Commando cyclone collector which also has an anti crushing valve. Mike

    Kiwi piston dimensions

Guys Some advice please. I have finished (well almost) my KIWI and need to get it running. Using an electric drill it will fire but it is not sustained. I am using Coleman fuel. I have removed the float and valve and am using the float chamber as the fuel tank (I have blocked the normal fuel...

Can you remove anodizing color from aluminum?

Guys Just be aware that the metal surface does not need to be conductive - it's an electrostatic process! You do however need to make electrical contact with the base metal with the electrode.

    Sandblaster!!!

Hi GreenTwin The solution is simple - use a vacuum extractor. The process of sand blasting (with almost all media) creates lots of fine particles which obscure vision and must not be inhaled. My cabinet has an inlet filter and the extractor on the opposite side connected to a vacuum cleaner...

    Sandblaster!!!

Brian It's worth looking at some of the YouTube videos about the modifications needed to make this Harbour Freight sand blaster work. The original system of air/media management just doesn't work and all cabinets of this type seem to suffer from the same problem of low/bad/intermediate media...

    Stuart Number 9 Engine

In my experience the finish is determined by rigidity of the between centres bar and cutting speed. For a 1inch bore I would use at least a 3/4inch bar or ideally a 7/8 bar with a rounded cutter and the slowest feed rate possible. I always finish up with close to a mirror finish. I adjust the...

    Powder paint for model engines

I came across this video of a guy using a tribo electrostatic powder gun in his shed. He seemed to get very good results with very basic equipment. Worth a watch! Mike

    Powder paint for model engines

There are some good videos on electrostatic (Tribo) powder coating on this site. their basic gun costs £150ish in UK https://www.electrostaticmagic.co.uk/

    Powder paint for model engines

Brian you might fine the attached of interest. It describes a method of making a simple Tribo gun for powder coating. Chris Gabel gave this lecture at the last Midlands Model Engineering show. He very kindly supplied me with a copy noting that he held the copyright but was happy for folk to...

What is your purpose in getting into the hobby of building model engines?

Guys - if it an't broke, don't fix it!! The beauty of this forum is the diversity of views. Some views I think are just wrong but it's their view and maybe I will come to agree. We should accept different views without being personal in the comments. I watch many YouTube videos and recognise...

    Cutting oils

My main criteria is to use a cutting fluid which has no smell. As an apprentice we used "soap water" which was cheap, very susceptible to bacterial growth unless the correct water was used and basically stunk. It got into your clothes and stunk! I only use cutting oil which has no smell and...

Building a twin cylinder inline i.c. engine.

In my view the time that a process takes is irrelevant. What is relevant is the enjoyment of the process. This can range from trying to make a model in quick time, running it and moving onto the next project. Quality of the model would not be an issue to such a builder. Others try to make...

Brass should have a negative rake to prevent snatching when using a drill press. If the brass is held in a vice on a mill then a positive rake can be used since it can't snatch but the hole will be cleaner with a negative rake.. Copper is difficult due to its softness but a positive rake is...
