How about the Moto Guzzi V8? At 500cc and 44 x 41mm, it's almost a model engine in full size! At half scale, the dimensions would be quite reasonable for modelling.

    A Benchmaster mill non restoration.

That sounds about right. You mentioned most of the heat is at the top. It's not just from the belt and pulley is it?

15 degrees on the nut might be a lot of preload on a stiff spindle. Is the spindle easy to turn by hand and smooth?

    V-TWIN---MAYBE V-4

Brian, if the tappets are at the same V angle as the cylinders, you only need two cams. One inlet for both cylinders and one exhaust. I used this principal on my boxer twin.

    V-TWIN---MAYBE V-4

It's not a gearbox, just a row of three gears of the same size, adjusted for minimum backlash. The gears are from Aerial Square fours (which are effectively two parallel twins in one case). Brian's idea with effectively two independent engines and no load will be fine with the Lovejoy coupling...

Perhaps, if you fancy something small from billet, I could suggest the Whittle Aero V8? I have a drawings and materials kit from Hemingway, not yet started. I have modelled the engine in CAD and I'd be happy to share the data with anyone who has bought the drawings (not wanting to infringe on...

    V-TWIN---MAYBE V-4

There is no problem with coupling two engines together as Brian is proposing. A V4, V6, V8 etc. Is no different to a row of V twins. I have been working on a land speed record bike which had two parallel twin engines (supercharged and running on methanol and nitromethane) coupled together with...

    18 Cylinders Isotta Fraschini (straight six-cylinder x3 )

Remember the spark will occur at some advance, before the piston is at the top of its travel. If the cylinder head is flat, the piston shape will create a reverse squish band. I can't guess what effect that might have on the flame front, but if it slows it down a lot, you will just need to use...

    A Benchmaster mill non restoration.

The Igaging readouts which were on my mill read to 0.05mm. I am thinking of fitting them to my Roundbed.

    A Benchmaster mill non restoration.

I recently fitted a cheap (£130) two axis DRO to my Sieg X3L mill. The DRO came with glass scales, one at 250mm long which I fitted direct to the Y axis. The other was 1000mm long and I cut it down for the X axis. Before that, I had three of the Igaging type magnetic readouts. I have kept the...

    Plasticity 3D

I completely understand that most of those on this group would rather have a stand-alone, free to use or at least one-time purchase CAD system. With regards to learning, I have taught several people to use CAD. With the benefit of an instructor familiar with CAD, it takes only a few hours to...

    Mini diesel engine.

I completely agree! All of us building engines today are using the knowledge gained by others who built engines over the last century and more. We are all standing on the shoulders of giants. I am sure that if our predecessors could see what we are doing, they would be happy to know that their...

    Plasticity 3D

I use F360 commercially. The licence is very reasonable by comparison to other commercial CAD and I like the system by which I can use the licence points to use the add-ons for just the time that I need them. Coming from a background of professional CAD systems (CATIA and Unigraphics) I found...

    72 cc V8 project

Got it! It's because you can. It is for the same reason that my radial engine has a supercharger.

Why titanium for the valves? I get that there is a satisfaction in making them from a difficult material, but when you're running in aluminium seats and guides, there can be no need for ti valves, is there?

    Homemade sandblasters .

What is the world coming to? Can't use sand for sandblasting. Can't use solder for soldering. Can't use paint stripper for paint stripping.... Back to the subject, I built a blasting cabinet from cheap hardboard. It is roughly a 2 foot cube, but the bottom is an inverted pyramid with an exit...

    A 15cc sidevalve opposed twin

Thanks! The two plugs are electrically in series. I have made my own driver which supplies a constant current, so it works with one or two plugs in series.

    A 15cc sidevalve opposed twin

The new crank went together without problems. I increased the press fit of the big end dowels to the point of yield in the webs (which are made from EN24T!). Welding brought the area up to red heat, so some of the stress will have relieved. The connecting rods were clamped in aluminium heat...

    Wobble Plate Air Compressor

Ah, I see! I had read that it was a compressor for a turbine and I had thought gas turbine, not steam... Presumably your burner operates in near atmospheric firebox pressure.

    Wobble Plate Air Compressor

Nice build! What was the compressor working against when you tested it on the lathe? When I tested the centrifugal compressor I made for my radial engine, I restricted the output and measured airspeed using a cheap wind speed meter. Multiplying speed by the exit area gives flow rate, so I have a...
