    Let's talk drilling...

I use a spotting drill first. More accurate then a center drill. If the part is thin I drill with the largest drill after spotting drill. Thicker parts are bored with 1/4" drill and then the largest drill. Too many variables to help with best results, depends on the material, hole size, motor...

    left hand drills

Thanks Jim, I was pretty sure the rotation would be counter clockwise. I had tried to find the info on the web, the only info was what I already knew about drilling out a broken screw . Must have tried for 2 hours before posting here. This is apparently a brand new set of drills. Neighbor lady...

    Torch for silver solder.

Victor torch is a good investment. The hose connects to a propane tank used for barbecues. Lowes among others offers a $19.00 fill up. I do not recall what the initial cost of the tank is. You get two torch heads, the smaller one is about the same size as a Bernzomatic torch .The larger head is...

    Igaging products

I have two on the mill Y&Z axis. Also one on a drill press and two on a lathe. For 5or more years I had no problems. Until Monday I had problems with the Z axis on the drill press and the X on a lathe. I tried several things, first I isolated the scale from the brackets with electrical tape...

Centering in a 4 jaw chuck

Brian I made points for 1/4",3/8", 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4". These are used on my mill or lathe in R-8 holders for the mill and MT holders on the lathe. They come in handy on the mill to center a work piece using what ever R-8 holder I use for machining. On the lathe the points are used to center...

    Cx701 lathe report

I believe you do have a carriage stop. Look at the carriage and you will see an Allen wrench screw. In the photo it is on the flat portion to right of the compound ( top slide) handle and below the Tail stock. Not familiar with your lathe but my 10x22 Grizzly lathe Has a similar lock screw . mike

    Cx701 lathe report

I bought new Allen screws that are much better for the tool post than the ones that came with it. Not sure where I bought them, Mcmaster Carr, Bolt Depot etc. These are hardened metric screws , the heads are much larger and take a larger hex wrench. I had to turn down the two screw heads next...

    Cx701 lathe report

I told a friend to cut the tang .He did, too short and I had to go over there and remove the arbor. I chucked the arbor and used the rest to hold up the tang end . Faced the end and bored and tapped for a 3/8/ 16 machine bolt. Then adjusted the bolt so the arbor would pop out . The arbor would...

    Stuart Tap and Dies 32-50-72091

I saw the same set on E-bay . This was a used set in supposedly good condition. Sold for $100.00. Your set looks in perfect condition though cannot be sure from a pic. My nephews are machinists and they said that Stuart is a good set for the money. mike

    New ..

I had a similar problem with a 3/48 tap in a brass part. I tried different approaches and what finally worked was this. I bored a piece of 1014 steel round for the tap. Then soldered the tap in the hole with plumbers soft solder. The first 2" was turned down in the lathe with the tap in place...

Broken screw, drill bit and tap removal tips, the do and the don't!!

I broke a 2/56 tap in an aluminum cylinder . Core drilling was not an option as I would have to drill 1-3/4" to get to the other side of the cylinder. I tried alum, has worked in the past but not this time. Before scrapping the part I ground the stub of the tap flush with the cylinder head. I...

    Turning large thin-wall tubing

I would turn a disk, wood, aluminum etc for each end if the tube is long. I don't think the cross bar will work as intended because it only supports 4 places. I have had occasion to turn and face copper tube 3" in diameter. I turned 2 wood disks, one one each end and a center hole for the...

    EZ Engine for beginners 13NOV09

I gave you the wrong dimension on the piston. The correct dimension is 1/2" x 1/2" x 7/16" and 1/4" in diameter. The total length is 15/16". I finished the model and it runs well. I might paint it in the future.

    EZ Engine for beginners 13NOV09

The valve is made from 1/4" diameter stock. Each end and in the middle is 1/4" . In between the diameter is .125 . The end that receives the connecting rod is 1/4" x .3125 long. This is milled or filed to .125 x .3125. This gives a flat spot to drill and tap 4/40. When done the end resembles the...

    Hardware store steam engine

My first engine was off the shelf hardware too. At the time the only machine tools I had was a drill press. The engine was an oscillator. The cylinder is 3/4" brass long nipple with screw on end caps. The piston is a piece of brass that Filed mostly by hand and finished with the piston rod...
