    steering pinion gear

I am building Rudy K's Case tractor. Finally made a good boiler and now will try making gears. I think I'll be okay with the spur gears but the steering pinion gear has me stumped. I have gear cutters for the spur gears. Pinion has 16 teeth, blank diameter is 0.375 All gears are 48 pitch. Seems...

    knurled rivets

I have 1/8 x1/4" knurled solid copper rivets. I would like to use these to locate the front and back heads of a 1-1/2" diameter copper boiler. I am thinking 3 rivets 120 ° apart . The flanges will be hard soldered . I plan to flux the front and backheads , then drill the rivet holes and flux...

Metal to metal dry lubrication... what product?

DriCote is a spray on dry lubricant. I use it on sprockets and chain mechanism that raises or lowers a planer bed. Wood dust does not adhere. Any grease will attract dust. I understand the name has changed to Bostic Dricote or something similar. mike

    Building Rudy's Steam Tractor

Rudy calls for a steel pipe 2" ID for the outer casing. This makes installing threaded parts easier. Blast pipe bracket, wheel pivot bracket etc are bolted to the casing. Brass is fine as long as it is thick enough to drill and thread. Otherwise, brass brackets and soft solder will also work...

    Cutting fluids

I use air on the mill, not on the lathe. Depending on the stock I use plumbers cutting oil on ferros stock, kerosene or WD-40 on aluminum. Nothing on brass, plastics and phosphorous bronze. Been told milk is a turning lube for copper. Have not tried it myself. Air cools the cutter and stock...

    gear cutters

I have Ivan Laws booklet. I'll try it as a last resort. thanks mike Steve ,tried to contact SDP/PI. Listed the gears I need. Email was declined. I bought 4cutters from Travers . Got tired of trying to source gears. mike

    gear cutters

I am needing gear cutters with 48 pitch. Buying them is out of the question, would need to take out a mortgage to pay for them. Tried to buy the 9 gears I need, average cost $60.00 , more than I will pay. I found metric gear cutters that may be close enough, 55 m . Will the metric cutters be...

    Thin plates bend when clamped

Try clamping over a solid scrap. I use MDF often because it is flat and cheaper than metal. I do not know why the ends are down .010 Is it possible the shims are not the same thickness? If the center shim is thicker than the ends then this may cause the problem. Other than that I don't have a...

    Disc sander

Before I bought a disk sander I made 10" disks from 3/4" MDF I glued 60 grit on one side , 100 grit on the other side. Made two more disks, 180 Grit and 220 , then the third disk 320 and 600 wet and dry paper for metal sharpening. I still use them once in a while on a cabinet saw. mike

    Measuring length on a lathe

You can convert a digital caliper for the Z axis on the lathe. I am sure a you tube video will explain it. I am going to do the same when I get back to machining. I had an Igauge piece of crap digital scale and removed it Saturday morning. There is another thread I posted telling what i thought...

    Iguage junk digital scales

I'm done with digital anything. I liked the convenience when I first tried it. I counted revelutions on the handwheel before I went digital. I will go back to that. When I emailed Igauge , 3 times , and never got a response I was POed to say the least. When I get time I will convert a digital...

How to limit swarf into the chuck ?

Maybe I'm missing something, every chuck and back plate has a thru hole. Mini-lathes usually have a 5/8" or so diameter thru hole. One of my grandpops employers had lathes with 3-1/2" bore. I suppose it had a back plate with a bore at least that big. mike

Summer Garden battles about to begin

I have a Cub Cadet that also has the plug for a hose. I never used it though. I like your idea of spraying WD-40 in the hose plug, I'll give it a try . mike

How to limit swarf into the chuck ?

I have a vacuum cleaner by the lathe and use it often to clean the chuck. Most of time I use it for the bed and chip tray. I have a friend that blows air thru the chuck. I can't convince him that it a bad idea. He did not learn even when he had to dissasemble the chuck to clean the swarf.

    Iguage junk digital scales

I bought a set of these scales, 6" , 12" and 24" aluminum rails. Only one of the displays works. The other two jump all over the place. I know if the rail is installed backwards this will happen. The display jumps even with no rails installed. These are the newer type that do not use a battery...

Summer Garden battles about to begin

I have two high tunnel gardens. Last year I planted plum tomatoes and Big Boy tomatoes for fresh eating. Also planted Bell and bannana peppers. Beans and butternut squash grows up on chicken wire panels . Spinach , kale and swiss chard also. Carrots in a raised bed and a few leeks there too. I...

    liquid flux

I am hard soldering a small boiler that will run at 30 lbs PSI . It will test at 60 lbs PSI. The front head is leaking at at least two spots. I cannot remove the head to re- flux because the copper rod stay is in . I would probably destroy the front head if I tried to remove it. The boiler is...

Miniature tap guide and depth stop

Brian , milk is supposed to be a lubricant for turning copper. I have not tried milk myself. I have threaded copper tubing several times. I use Castrol Moly Dee for a tapping fluid. I use it for all metal tapping. Moly Dee has been banned, I suppose it causes cancer or something. I have about 2...

Miniature tap guide and depth stop

Brian, where was the die made? I ask because when I first began machining 20+ years ago I bought two separate tap & die sets. These were imports, probably China. I thru out $90.00 on this junk. I kept all of the dies as they made fine sinkers. I kept 3 taps and made punches from them. The rest...

    New cabinets for Tooling

Your description is correct. Rabbets are along the perimeter. Dados are grooves or as I refer to them as plows are in the field. I am a retired carpenter and have worked in cabinet shops as well. Rabbets and dados can be made in many ways. Cabinet saw with dado blades or even a single blade...
