    3” boiler project.

Will do after I get home. I find myself making a list of things not to do for the next project. I need to retire. Work gets in the way.

    3” boiler project.

It does tarnish, but I wipe it down after use then use a polishing cloths do it cleans up nicely. This is just cosmetics and artistic balance.

    3” boiler project.

Hmmm... With 13 tubes, there is no space to put a blowoff valve. I have the whistle on it’s own outlet. It makes since that the relief valve would see a pressure drop in line with the accessories it powers. My original thought was to place the relief valve on it’s own dedicated port where the...

    3” boiler project.

Planks are installed and I am checking the fit before doing a final clean and polish. The plank end covers were spun using brass shim stock. It needs the planking extended through the base. I’m worried about scorching in the firebox area and was thinking a base layer of cylinder head gasket...

    3” boiler project.

I did a run up to see how the burner performed and if I liked the viewport before cladding. The boiler built up steam quickly and flame appears nice and even across the ceramic surface. The insulation layer is now complete and today I add the planking. The bull’s-eye lens worked out nicely...

    3” boiler project.

Seems to work fine. Did not need a latch. The hinge is tilted so the door falls closed. I need to find a less clunky looking regulator and a model sized propane tank.

Clarkson Vertical Steam Engine 1” bore

The boiler is almost complete. I redesigned the connecting rod since the video to get rid of the clunk. I will redo the studs so they look neater. Steam will point out any leaks.

Need to do some clean up and polishing. The viewport is threaded and will, screw into the boiler to light and monitor the flame. I need to add a latch.

This will certainty do the job. After test running the boiler, I can appreciate the idea of not burning my fingers with the added benefit of heat conservation. I’ve seen several examples of people planking their boilers, but this is the first time I’ve seen it done with efficiency as a primary...

    Collet swedging tool.

Thanks! I will give this a try.

    Collet swedging tool.

I built a swedging tool for use in restoring vintage musical instruments. It works well, but I collets do not stand up to constant use. I was thinking about case hardening. I found a product called “Cherry Red” that I think might work. Typically I am working with brass or silver. I often...

    3” boiler project.

I am looking forward to running the boiler once I finish the viewport. The burner was certainly one of the more interesting parts of the project. There are some really frightening videos of homemade burners so I thought I’d better get some advice. I meant to ask you what you what adhesive you...

    3” boiler project.

Burner is ready to go. I’m constructing a viewport with a glass window for the boiler to light and monitor the flame. The boiler just slips on and off. I am thinking about building a coal burning version. Thanks for all the help! I’ll post the complete steam unit after I install the viewport.

    Toolpost Grinders

That’s the machine. Once I got it setup, it worked fine. Thanks for the PDF.

    Trying to identify an engine.

It had been next to the parents fire place since 1968. I cut a new crankshaft for it and ran it at an engine show several years ago. The carburetor, tank, strange piping, and wooden handle went with a Folders coffee can for cooling. I initially went with the coffee grinder look. I was told...

    Toolpost Grinders

I also have a vintage Dumore. I made a mount that slips in and replaces the quick change tool post. It’s a little big for my South Bend 10L. I last used it to make a mandrel for forming bassoon bocals at the old shop. I’ve used it only once in 15 years.

I found the CO meter on Amazon. It was not expensive and reacts fast.

    3” boiler project.

Update. I drilled a new .25mm orifice on the jewelers lathe. The burner is sitting in what will be the stand. I set the copper cylinder for the water feed tank to show that I intended to have actual boiler slip sit on top. It burns clean and even. I did make some adjustments to a packing of...

They have some serious machinery. I had to remove the piece to reheat multiple times.

The jet is removable so I can change it out. I knew it was likely too big. Testing is always done outside in open air to be safe. I am waiting for replacement drill bits. Sorry for the scare.
