    Know where your fingers are---

One of my many experiences was working on Broadcasting Transmitters, some times it involved working inside a room that was actually part of the transmitter. Everything is live, as you are there to maintain it. Or You turn every thing off and then verify everything is dead by using a 4 foot long...

    Know where your fingers are---

Plus it seems everyone is forgetting the Elephant in the same room, POWER, Treat Every Wire as if it has multiple Kvolts and Mamps, It can ruin your day with a simple brush even with some fabric between you and the wire or ungrounded item. Drop a screwdriver onto a powered source and you will...

    Considering a 3 phase CNC small lathe - - - have 240V single phase

In Canada having 3 phase wiring is strictly a commercial or industrial option. While the 2 phase wiring is standard for residential. This allows 110 volt single phase and 220 volt two phase appliances. Having used single phase, two phase and three phase wiring there are advantages to each.

    Making a model Cannon

In its original size, that would have been a real beast to move from place to place.

    Making a model Cannon

Just a side comment on all the excellent work by everyone involved. My reason for the choice of the French 75 is it is the original and many subsequent development such as the Sherman M4 75, T34 75, of WWII were direct descendants. The French 75 was one of the first to have a hydraulic recoil...

    Making a model Cannon

I have always wondered if anyone has ever made a French 75 scaled such that it uses a 22 LR. it would prove an intricate design challenge

Steam engine with a Reuleaux triangle instead of an eccentric.

I just love old engines like this. There is a full scale engine at the Renolds Museum in Witaskiwin, Alberta. The flywheel is two stories high. The operation is slow but watching it operate is a reminder, not all engines have to run at high RPM to be effective. Thanks for reminding all of us of...

    Shop Vac for the Mill

Anything that could not be steam cleaned was trashed. The entire basement was stripped down to the bare floor and bare walls and Disinfected 3 times Air dried for a week, then it was steam cleaned 4 times and air dried for another week. It had to be inspected by City, Provincial and insurance...

    Shop Vac for the Mill

Well you are talking Ground Water. Ours was sewage. While the Engineering inspection of the house stated yes it had a back up valve. No body had inspected it. It turned out it was installed backwards. So you can imagine what happened.

    Shop Vac for the Mill

No! And currently the workshop is all torn down, due to a flood in the basement which included the workshop. I used the oneida dust collector as the base unit. It works well but when there is hot SWARF involved it plays havoc with the plastic Hoses and the Plastic Cyclone. I suggest using older...

    Shop Vac for the Mill

I have a suggestion, as the SWARF coming off can be very hot, a metal wand feeding into a metal cyclone separator to keep physical separation between any metal SWARF and the Shop Vac components. I use a similar arrangement on my grinder, but my shop vac / Cyclone are on a separate wheeled dolly...

As with any Appliance, Ontario or elsewhere in Canada. Cx701 lathe report

I worked on High Power Transmitters and many of the high voltage capacitors had a very toxic oil in them. You did not want to be around when one developed a leak or worse when one exploded. Getting a dose of the oil in a gas state was fatal. I had to pull on a person when it happened and please...

    CX601 Milling Machine

I had another look. I would suggest a different approach to the actual lifting method. 1. and electric Winch 2. a chain fall 3. a block and tackle using as many pulleys as required to make the lifting weight manageable with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
