    Stuart Tap and Dies 32-50-72091

If taps and dies are HSS, they will be etched/engraved with HSS usually on the top, but maybe on the bottom, so your taps and dies are carbon steel. That is not necessarily a bad thing for occasional use, despite what you may hear to the contrary. Dave The Emerald Isle

    Stuart Tap and Dies 32-50-72091

The taps and dies you show may have been sold by the Tap & Die Co., but they were manufactured by Totem. Totem was a well respected tap and die manufacturer in England. Dave The Emerald Isle

    Compressor question

The main problem with the tyre inflator compressors is that they are extremely noisy, and would not be welcome in a show environment. They claim quite high psi outputs but the air volume is very small. The cheap Aldi/ Lidl ones are also very noisy for the workshop, unless you have a place...

    Advise on Myford leadscrew

A guy called Tony Crowe - a member of the Myford io group - used to sell bronze half nuts. At least I think they were for the main leadscrew, or was it for the cross slide? ! Dave The Emerald Isle

    Small filing machine

The original design was for securing the attachment to the lathe bed. My lathe is a Myford S7, quite a bit bigger than originally designed for (I would imagine). In order to keep the overall height down, I shortened the con rod from ideal proportions. I'm not sure what speed the lathe was...

Squaring off the bottom of a blind hole

Being a metal butcher of the lowest order, when my end mills get a 'bit' worn, in other words just scratch the metal instead of cutting, I take a diamond file and just round off the blunt bit. Brutal, I know, un-scientific, I know, usually different amounts get taken off the cutting edges and...

    Small filing machine

If the con rod was longer, the angular displacement would have been less, for sure. I was trying to keep the overall height down. Looking at the original design, the con rod was longer. The pillars for this one are 3-3/4" high. The stroke is 1-1/8", as is the con rod. Everything was from...

    Small filing machine

A while ago I saw a small filing machine for sale on eBay. There were quite a few pics of it - enough for me to make a copy. One of the pics gave a partial view of the original design from the book 'Practical Benchwork for Horologists' and this gave a starting point with regard to size. I've...

    Ignition system for Farm Boy

Have you tried one of these on a hit 'n' miss engine? Reason I ask is that I note they have auto advance and I was under the impression that this was not suitable for hit 'n' miss engines. (hearsay only, not practical experience). Dave The Emerald Isle

    Ignition system for Farm Boy

Next step if that fails, have a look at the replacement ignition modules...

Lister Diesel 20cc - Any complete plans ?

There is a guy in Australia who made a diesel model of a Lister D, about 20cc capacity. His was all fabricated. I believe the fuel he used was kerosene. There have been others built and some used home brewed castings. A search through the Model Engineer magazine index will reveal more info...

    Acceptable castings from Kit suppliers.

I had issues with castings for a Robinson hot air engine from a UK supplier. Blowholes, undersize castings, cylinder base nowhere near perpendicular to the link anchor on the top of the cylinder. It took 3 replacement flywheels and cylinders to make anything anywhere near acceptable. In the...
