    Unimat SL lathe motor conversion.

Ken I don't know if you are interested (or have done) other mods to your Unimat. There is a book by Rex Tingey: Making the Most Of the Unimat. I can send you a copy if you would like it. Dave The Emerald Isle

    Elmer's No.35 Pump

Yes. this piece even has the DuPont marking on the bottom! I was given a load of offcuts (sink cut-outs and the like) some time ago and they come in handy for small model bases. It's easy to cut with a hacksaw and files well. Dave The Emerald Isle

    Elmer's No.35 Pump

My long term project has stalled and as I had been given 4 week's notice of a visit to the Body Shop for some R & R (= hospital for some Renewal and Rejuvenation) I thought it a good idea to undertake a quickie project before absence from the workshop set in. I've looked at Elmer's no.35 pump...

    Edgar T Westbury Seal 15cc

Just a thought Simon: As a public spirited gesture and an aid to future purchasers of the castings, would you give Hemmingway a list of the errors you find? I would not be a beneficiary, by the way! Dave The Emerald Isle

jowitt poppet steam engine, Inlet valve does not make sense to me... what am i missing? Can someone explain?

On the valve Parts drawing, there is shown the Inlet Valve Seating, screwed M10 x 1.0. You will note the countersunk valve seat therein. The Inlet Valve Seating screws into the end of the cylinder. The valve head sits in the countersunk area until actuated. This then allows steam/air into...

    Tap sizes

Peter You may have already realised, but with serial taps the first tap have 1 ring ground on the shank, the second tap will have 2 rings ground on the shank and the full depth tap will have nothing on the shank. That's the usual, but no doubt there could be different methods of identification...

PM research red wing air cooled drawings

I've just had a look at the PM Research site and the Red Wing engine. Normally, the flywheel diameter is the limiting factor for lathe work. Other bulky bits would be machined on the mill. However, without the use of a milling machine, you would need to hold the crankcase on the cross slide...

    Bronze suppliers.

You may have to go for a larger round bar and machine it down to get the size you require. Look at eBay UK for price comparisons and then look at model engineering suppliers. Search for something like 'Model Engineering suppliers UK'. Make sure you are sitting down when you see the prices +...

    Elmer's plans

Elmer Verburg was a prolific small engine designer and builder in times when the majority of model engine builders' workshops were quite basic. His designs reflected the difficulty of very accurate measurement. If you download Elmer's designs from John Tom Elmers Engines Steam Engine Plans...

    Wrong way fly cutter

I needed to make some washers with one concave side. The easiest way was to use a fly cutter to scallop out the concave face on the end of a bar. So, a piece of 1-1/4" bar was quickly fashioned into a fly cutter using a piece of 3/16" HSS as the cutter. Only when it was finished and inserted...

    Propane for Rudy’s Pioneer

I remember somewhere, some time ago that a trick to check the throat size required when using propane was to cover the air inlet of the carb with something like masking tape. Pierce the tape and enlarge the hole at each starting attempt until the engine runs. That last hole in the tape will...
