    Tests of CDI Ignition Modules

Don: With all the fantastic work you have done in the past on Magneto's and your very scientific approach to that work. I am sure we can trust your results. It's something I always wanted to do and have quite a setup here that could accomplish it. But I just never took it past testing the...

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

IF the above diagram is correct for Brian's design then I have to agree with Raveney. It appears to me most of the mass is inboard (and even a bit below) the pivot point. In my mind there would be little to no centrifugal force acting on the mass to fly out in a direction along the plane of the...

How to get a mirror finish on aluminum

A tip I can offer for aluminum is: After you go through all the grits suggested (which all leave scratches of some sort) use steel wool in 0000 grade (very very fine). Steel wool "shaves" the surface and does not leave scratches like the papers. You'll notice a much better shine right away. And...

How to get a mirror finish on aluminum

Glass bead blasting can give anything from a coarse to satin finish depending on the grade media. The result (best I can tell) looks pretty much like what you show.

    Ok. Let me know. Thanks

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

How well does it run on starting fluid? That will eliminate (reduce) the suspicions of your carb being the issue (and all the work to try another one). If everything else if fine then it should take off on starting fluid.

    A new ignition circuit

TonyM: Back in post 237 you posted a perf board layout for the ignition circuit. Did that work out? If you made any changes that resulted in a finished product would be willing to post them? Your solution would be easier for folks to build than the pcb's I posted and would help get more made...

    Ignition system

Thanks for the vote of confidence Peter195124. It has proven to be a very reliable circuit. The info to build the ignition circuit is slowly getting buried on this forum so I'll attempt to bring it to the top. The link below will take folks to the (current) most recent posts. If you scroll down...

As usual - WOW!! amazing work.

    Great. Another happy customer. :-)

    A new ignition circuit

I never envisioned the timeout being an issue. And it hasn't been. The circuit could have been designed for a several second (or longer) timeout. Something more in line with times that might actually damage a coil should it stay energized. But that would require more circuitry than the driver...

    A new ignition circuit

When you turn the engine over by hand it may "appear" that the spark is occurring when the points close (the LED lights). In fact when it is operated so slowly the timeout is triggering every time. The timeout is only about 15 mill-seconds (I think) after the points close (the LED turns on). So...

    A new ignition circuit

BTW. Perhaps it wasn't clear, but you can connect your points to the input instead of the hall sensor. The hall sensor and magnet works like points i.e. normally high input going to ground when active. Eliminate the capacitor / condenser that it typically across the points on your engine. It is...

    A new ignition circuit

If you build the driver according to the circuit diagram it DOES by design fire the plug when the points OPEN. In fact the nice thing about this design is that it will not remain on and burn up your coil. If the engine stops with the points closed it will "time out" and stop driving the coil...

    289/302 Ford V-8 enginee

(Ref first post). George already built it. And an amazing job (as usual) he did. It will be Terry's build we will all be looking forward to. Nice work. It's always stressful sitting by and hoping the printer does not screw up at the end of a print.

    V-TWIN---MAYBE V-4

Steamchick: The system you describe is "wasted spark". But as you noted in your last sentence, it requires a double ended coil (no ground reference). Brian can't do that with one "standard" coil as he plans. The easiest solution would be to purchase a wasted spark (double ended) coil from a...

    V-TWIN---MAYBE V-4

Hmmm. The arrangement should be interesting. Maybe I'm missing something. Two sets of points, driving one coil, with two spark plug cables from the same coil. How will only one cylinder fire at a time? No need to elaborate. I'll stay tuned.

    V-TWIN---MAYBE V-4

Thanks for the source of the points. As for the coil issue. I was referring to the wiring. I guess it will be wasted spark then. Will that work with the cylinder angle / valve timing etc. Looking good.. Thanks

    V-TWIN---MAYBE V-4

Hi Brian: What vehicle do you ask for points from when you buy them. They must be getting scarce. And where from - CTC? Going to need two coils as well. Right?
