Film on Motorcycle Manufacturing early 20th century

You Tube link to a nice film on motor cycle manufacturing in the early 20th century, Starts with casting the engine cylinder and then shows boring the cylinder and crankcase parts. Goes on to the assembly of the engine and the rest of the motorcycle. Gail in NM https://youtu.be/6m8PmMQK76s

    Air compressor

Tire inflating compressors are generally made for high pressure and low volume.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BJFHAW/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 Also most make a lot of noise. An air brush compressor works well for running engines as low speed. I like this one...

Can I use graphite for flame licker piston(s)?

Graphite works fine in a Poppin. You have to have a very good smooth finish on the cylinder to keep wear down as the graphite is soft a wears easily. Gail in NM

    MEM down....

MEM is up and down on sort of an hour by hour basis. Quoting from Arnold, one of MEM's technical admins, from earlier today. "Apologies for any inconvenience - the recent outages was due to issues our hosting provider is experiencing on the back-end PHP software our forum uses...

The spammer has been banned. Several others were spammed by him. I delayed banning him a little bit because he had a few tricks that I wanted to find out a little bit more about and once they they have been banned some of this information is no longer available to me. Gail in NM

    Snap ring pliers

Gordon, I get a lot of supplies from Amazon also. I am hadicapped so no longer drive so it is the quickest way. They are a little more expensive blut I have the materials in hand before I can get a ride around town and if I subtract out the cost of vehicle operation to go looking is is really...

    Snap ring pliers

I use a lot of e-rings/e-clips. This is a great tool for installing the small ones. It took a little bit to learn how to load the clip into the tool but now it is quick and easy. ILt will install a e-clip right up next to a flat surface. Here is a link to an ebay iisting for one but I bought...

    Spark plug boots

For the wire leads, many people, including me, use test lead wire such as is used on electronic test meters. It comes in a lot os sizes and diameters from verr thin to quite thick. For my small engines I normally use #28 which is the thinnest available with out problems. Spark ignition...

Viton O Ring for Steam Engine

I agree with Brian. It is very important the the width of the groove is much wider than the cross section diameter of the ring. This gives the rubber a place to flow when the ring is compressed. It also allows the ring to "roll" when the piston movement reverses and this reduces the stiction...

    Fun with a Laser Engraver/Cutter

Luc, My laser is a 30 watt RF excited air cooled metal tube laser that I bought used from an engraving shop 15 years ago when they were upgrading to a 50 watt unit. Branded ACCURIS but made by GCC. Still going strong after many hours of use. With the exception of one mirror there has not...

    Fun with a Laser Engraver/Cutter

And the finished project. Note that the corners on the top are ntoched and the sides and ends project up into these notched. This keeps the top from sliding off and yet is removable. Most of the crates for give away will be empty withe the tops glued on. And the filled crates wil not have...

    Fun with a Laser Engraver/Cutter

Now if the crate is not full, the bottles will all fall down in a jumble, so an egg crate structure was laser cut out of 1/64 and 1/32 styrene to support the bottles. Just slides inside the crate when assembled. Gail in NM

    Fun with a Laser Engraver/Cutter

Now, who wants an empty crate of adult beverages. To fill it up some bottles were made up out of1/4 inch diameter alumnium on the CNC lathe. (Had to get some machinining in as this is a machining forum.) And any respectable bottle needs a label. The labels were printed 16 up on a...

    Fun with a Laser Engraver/Cutter

To assemble the crates, the bottome is dropped into the fixture and the sides and end assemble on top of it. I found it easier to put assemble a side and end end and tack glue them before inserting two such sub assemblies into the fixture. That's mostly because my 3/4+ century old fingers...

    Fun with a Laser Engraver/Cutter

As I am making about 40 crates to use as give aways at the steamup, a fixtlure was made to assemble the crates. It is just two piates of 4.5 mm acrylic steet, againg cut out on the laser. I just used the finished crate dimensions for the top plate and the kerf of the laser gave me a 0.006...

    Fun with a Laser Engraver/Cutter

First photo shows the parts on the Laser engraver with all the cuts made and engraving done. Time to cut and engrave was about 7 minutes on my 30 watt machine. Gail in NM And the parts after lifting out of the laser.

    Fun with a Laser Engraver/Cutter

First off is to design the crate. As my engraver is quite old and no 64 bit drivers were ever made for it I run it under a Virtual Machine versiion of 32 bit XP and it is therefor most convenient to do designs for the Laser using ACAD2000 also running with the same virtual machine. The...

By way of background for this project, every year for the last 20 years or so a group of us with r famil memembers get tgather in the mountains east of Sllt Lake, UT, USA to play trains and have fun. This is known as the Poison Creek Steamup. The leader of this pack and track owner has a...
