    scotch yoke?

Anatol. I have used some MD filled Nylon for various purposes in the past. The Coefficient of Friction of MD filled Nylon on metalsis about .3 to .3 depending on the compounding used. This is slightly higher than the .15 typical value for acetal. Not enough to worry about. The MD Nylon has...

    scotch yoke?

Anatol. Of course reducing friction is good on any engine. For talking purposes I am going to use the SC1 as an example as you have the drawings available. Not suggesting that you build one. A little background on the SC1. It was not designed as a high efficiency engine. It was part of an...

    scotch yoke?

A ball bearing could replace the slider , but in my opinion it would not decrease the friction enough to make it worth while. Consider that the horizontal velocity of the slider is highest when the piston is around top and bottom dead centers. Here the pressures on slider is at it's lowest...

    scotch yoke?

The easiest way to see the engine is to go to: http://grahamind.com/downloads.html and down load both the brochure a manual for the SC1A. The manual contains a full set of drawings for the engine with enough details that an engine could be constructed from scratch. As the kit is pre-machined...

    scotch yoke?

I like Scotch Yoke drives. They can be built very short giving a lower center of gravity which can be helpful for marine applications. If you make the valve gear drive a Scotch yoke also it gives you a true sine wave motion which makes timing very easy. Main down side is they don't look as...

Types of bronze for steam piston

My choice would be C93200, also known as C932, SAE660 or 932. It ie easily available from most industrial suppliers as well as metal vendors for about US$10 per foot for 1/2 nominal diameter. Normally supplied about 1/32 inch oversise for machining to size. Very easy to machine and my 'go...

    Small milling

Wes, In response to your original post. As tohers have mentioned, a Dremel is not suitable for miilling. Too much runout and end play in the spindle. The same is true for most of the hand held rotarly toools. One exception is the Proxxon IB/E series, which is an industrial grade tool...

    Fuel bowls?

What ever you use to make the bowl, be sure to test the material to be sure it is resistant to the fuel. Ether softens many plastics. Drop a small piece of the material in a covered jar with a splash of fuel for a few days. In the early days, many spark ignition engines had fuel bowls of make...

    Bridgeport Varispeed spindle RPM dial

The Bridgeport 2HP Varispeed head has two small windows with the RPM for the high and low ranges showing through them. The numbers are small but adequate for those with normal vision. On a standard model the windows are about 5-1/2 feet above the floor. I have a CNC version so the windows...

Great Calculator for visual impared .. and others

As my eyes continue to deteriorate, legally blind in one and 20/200 in the other, I have been looking for a suitable replacement for my trusty HP calculators. I never found a physical calculator that would suit me. Needed large high contrast display and keys marking.. Also needed to be RPN and...

Super Bar stock supplier in US

For builders who build small engines and like cast iron. SPEEDY is one of the few suppliers who have cast iron smaller than 1" diameter. They have iron stock down to 5/8" diameter. A big difference when doing engines with less than 1/2 inch bore. Good service tool Gail in NM

Welcome Jim. Lots of information here for the asking. Tell us a little about yourself, tools and experience. Any strong interests in a particular type of engine? Gail in NM

    thread size

I will be fine to take off 0.005 from the major diameter. The ANSI thread specification for 3/16-24 shows it to be a NS (National Special) so it does not show up on a lot of thread charts, but the 0.1875 diameter of your stock is the absolute max size for that thread. a quick calculation...
