Welcome to the forum! There are a number of free plans, as well as paid plans, for a wide variety of engines. One of the simplest "starter engines" is the Webster - I and many, many others have built one of those. (In my case, I modified the plans to suit the materials and capabilities I had on...

As Matt on Diesel Creek says, "A grinder and some paint makes me the welder that I ain't." :)

I would quibble with the goal of producing a "stack of dimes" - TIG or gas welding is more likely to produce this look as part of the normal process, but for MIG and stick, a normal weld will not particularly look this way. Sometimes people will make the stack-of-dimes a priority, and in the...

    Welder

With regard to learning to weld, I would disagree that one *must* take a class. I did take one "continuing education" class at the local community college, 25 or more years ago, and it helped tremendously with my then-just-beginning stick welding. Repairing my shaper, an ongoing saga.

10" - well now I'm jealous! Many years ago, I was at an auction where I was hoping to buy a 12" shaper. No one was interested, the auctioneer wasn't even sure what it was, so I was very hopeful ... but just before bidding began, I heard someone say "I bet my friend would like that" - he called...

Repairing my shaper, an ongoing saga.

FWIW, the original motor on my 7" shaper was rated at 1/2 hp. It was 3-phase, which I didn't have at the time, so I swapped it out for a single-phase half-horse motor. For the speeds and feeds I use, that seems to be sufficient.
