    Yes, a flyback transformer would also work,...but I don't have one of those in my spare parts box either. So, I'ld need to order a flyback and incur the same week to 10 day shipping delay. Having a short inside the coil's insulation is pretty rare,...hopefully it's a one-time occurrence for me.

    The small motors used on drones make excellent alternators without any modification. These motors are brushless outrunners and put out 3 phase AC when used as a generator. A few diodes, or an automotive alternator rectifier pack, will convert the 3 phase AC into DC.

    If you decide to build the pump version which uses valve plates, I would change one of the plates from brass to steel, as brass slides on steel with less friction than brass on brass.

    The first diagram in post #8 shows an example of partial admission. Only a small part of the turbine wheel is being pushed by the steam from a nozzle.
