    Involute Gear Cutters

As DJC says I have found that 32DP crops up a lot both on UK and US designs for the type of engine we see modeled here. Or 0.8MOD if you prefer to work in metric will give near enough the same PCD so existing castings can be used without having the camshaft gear at a a noticably odd position in...

    Silver Solder Torch Selection

If you can find the more basic Sievert that just has the one knob that should be cheaper. You don't really need the pilot light and trigger control. This is a typical starter set sold in the UK and Europe https://cupalloys.co.uk/product/sievert-beginners-torch-kit/ Sorry don't know what the US...

    Silver Solder Torch Selection

Still got a small burner. You seem to have a limited budget so why buy a small torch and then find it is not big enough for future projects. At least a big torch will work just as well on small items as it will on larger ones. Try to find something like this. I don't use those two smaller...

    Silver Solder Torch Selection

In the UK any model engineer when talking about silver solder will not be talking about jewelry solder. We used to be able to use a 42% silver content but that contained cadmium which is now banned so have to use a 55% silver, no need to pay for more silver than you need on a model as it is not...

    Silver Solder Torch Selection

It is not so much the flame temperature that matters but the total heat output. So for fabrications a propane torch along the lines of the Sievert that Bob shows with a 28mm burner will do for most things. This puts out about 7.7Kw so you will have to convert than to whatever you rate them by in...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Only thing is he has Loctited the plugs in. Brian You should be able to FEEL compression even if you can't see it or measure it. Turn the flywheel by hand and it should get harder as it approaches TDC then go very easy as it passes. I posted these earlier it shows how an engine will bounce due...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Still no mention of what compression you have? You say there is compression with your hand over the top of the cylinder. You say the valves seal, you say your head gasket seals. So you should have compression if there is nowhere for the gasses to go. Unless a valve is open and allowing them...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Brian is "runing" it the opposite way as his starter box only goes in one direction.

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

I'll second that What compression have you got as that could also be low if timing out

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

You don't say what compression you have now that the engine is all back together. If it won't compress then it also won't be making a vacuum either to suck anything in.

    Shows keep getting smaller!

I have always look at it this way If I can buy some metal from one of the traders at the show then the saving on postage will cover the entrance fee. If I do the same a few more times with other purchases and maybe get a bit of discount for cash then that will cover my fuel bill, at least for...

    Shows keep getting smaller!

As for cost in the UK you don't have to pay to exhibit your model. Some shows will still expect you to pay your entrance fee others will give you free entry as a way of saying thank you for showing something as without that people won't have much to come and see. Vendors do pay for a pitch.

    Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition 2024

I would say maybe only 25% of the models in the videos or images on line were in the competiton classes so unlikely to be that. I have seen as good quality work over the years from photos and video of the US shows but lets face it an engine that is being run is unlikely to look as good as one...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

I doubt Brian's Loctite is working as it should hence his ability to easily remove the plugs where most of us would need to use heat to weaken the Loctite and then be faced with cleaning out it's remains. Dirty oily surfaces are one. Excessive gap due to things like using the wrong tapping...

    Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition 2024

In the UK the models are judged to a criteria and if more than one meets that and scores highly enough in any class you will get an award so there could be more than one Gold in any class. It is not 1st,2nd, 3rd so you could still get a Gold if she shows up. There are also options to enter your...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

You said that you had good compression so why the need for a valve tester now? "I'm running Viton o-rings on my pistons and both cylinders have good compression" Or was that just the pistons when the end of the head was covered by hand. As I mentioned somewhere earlier in the thread all the...

Thanks for all the comments. I did post about the build but not as extensive as I usually do but it shows the main parts. https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/topic/jekylls-pendulous-engine-c-1870/
