    Constraints/Dimensions or No Constraints/Dimensions in 3D Modeling

Just using ACAD to create the "3D sketches" (If I understand it correctly) & importing them into the 3D CAD program seems very counterproductive & I really don't understand why you would do that. Usually, the sketching tools in the 3D program are quite adequate at creating any sketched feature...

    3D cad question

I think all this might be going over the top for the original question posted by Gordon. (Although, it is some really good insight to 3D CAD). It's definitely a big shift from working in 2D ACAD (Which I still use all the time & don't under estimate the power of "paperspace" & using viewports)...

    3D cad design sequence

Gordon, you don't need to put the holes in your original sketch. close & finish that sketch . There should be a "hole" command you can use to put the first hole in, (You may need to select the CL axis) you should have options for linear & radially (ETC.) where you just need to enter no. of holes...

    3D cad design sequence

https://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/members/greentwin.45737/ I haven't used SolidWorks in a long time, so I don't know how that works. But your method works. In Pro-E, I can create "Family Tables", for instance that's how I create all my fasteners. I have one file for say a 1/4" SHCS...

    3D cad design sequence

Gordon, like I mentioned, your sketch may be too complicated. Start with a simple cylinder & add fin's, fillets, dtails later. You can go back to those at any time & add features. john

    3D cad question

A bunch of ways to skin a cat.... But what you say is true, we're all here to learn about different methods, whether its's CAD or machining. It's all good information. John

    Designing a Quiet Air Compressor

Nice! Ambitious project! Like you said, it's all about the engineering. I'm following...good luck! john

    3D cad question

Another great topic! IMHO, not using constraints is totally defeating the purpose of using 3D cad. https://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/threads/3d-cad-design-sequence.34574/page-3#post-386997 It's all about "relationships" between all the parts... & working in unison. John

    3D cad design sequence

Great post Gordon! This (3D CAD) is all like trying to eat an elephant... As you mentioned (& others) you might be better off designing all the individual parts & then later creating an assembly file with all the parts in it. I wouldn't worry too much about using the simulation & collision...

    Vederstein's Dancer Engine Build

I'm sure you'll get the beam engine going, Brian's designs are pretty good. Maybe you can still post your progress with the compressor? It's tough to find categories for these projects, they're all kind of engine related ...I've been thinking of a feeder mechanism for a steam hammer...

    Greetings from NW Oregon, USA.

Wow! You've been busy! Quite a few nice projects you've done! I'm curious about the opposed twin & the digging setup, I'd be interested in more when you have the time. Looks like you have found the right place. John

    Vederstein's Dancer Engine Build

That's AWESOME Ved! She's a beauty & a fine runner! Thanks for sharing the drawings & documenting your build. A great read. Well....whats next on the "drawing" board? John

    Greetings from NW Oregon, USA.

Welcome! I have a background similar to yours (I really like Pro-E). I've designed tooling (& some engines ;) ) for the die cast industry. What kind of engines or projects are you interested in? John
