    289/302 Ford V-8 enginee

I hope my version doesn't disappoint. George's assistance has been invaluable during my summer effort to come up with a third scale 289 model that can be machined using practical size cutters on my Tormach. As you can see from George's museum quality work, the full-size castings contain an...

What have you been doing today?

My shop time has been limited to SolidWorks modeling lately while trying to stay cool. Here in Texas the temperatures have been above 100F since May with little or no rain. For the last month, temps have been 105F with little relief at night. As I write this we're at 108F. I have a couple...

Offenhauser Inline 4 cylinder, Might Midget Model Engine Build

Ron Colonna used Loctite (don't know which variety) but told me he had issues with his exhaust valves coming loose. When I did mine, I used Loctite 620 and for safety pinned them in place with steel pins. Steel wasn't necessary and will make them more dufficult to remove should the need ever...

    Ageless 9 and 18 Radial

rlo, My (and other's) experiences with the oiling system in these engines is that the scavenger pump although larger can't keep up with the pressure pump and after several seconds into a run the sump is full of oil and the engine is smoking like crazy. The solution offered by Ageless, and it...

    Next Project

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I'm currently working on the CAD for a 1/3 scale 289 Ford HiPo V8. The crank and camshaft are essentially completed, and block is probably 60% finished. The complex detail at the front of the block has been a struggle using the source material I had...

    Ageless 9 and 18 Radial

I appreciate what you say about the difficulty involved with tightening the nuts on the 18 cylinder block. When I built mine I first made a set of custom wrenches designed especially for them. They've come in useful during a few other builds - Terry

    Next Project

I'm looking for plans for a next build that would be comparable in complexity to the Inline Six, 270 Offy, Knucklehead, Merlin, and radials I've built, but I'm not having much luck. I own a set of castings and the documentation that came with them for the Black Widow V8, but I'd rather build an...

    Ford 300 Inline Six

Hi, I put screws into all threaded holes, and I cover (rarely) flat surfaces that I want protected with yellow vinyl tape purchased from Harbor Freight a number of years ago. - Terry

    Ford 300 Inline Six

I used an IR camera that my oldest son gave me for Christmas several years ago. It's very similar to this one...

    Ford 300 Inline Six

The inductive tach recommended by Eccentric arrived. Mine's a slightly different model but still very easy to set up for a 6 cylinder engine (or any other number of cylinders). From its lope I was sure I had the engine idling at 800-900 rpm, but the tach kept telling me the real number was...

    Howell V4 question

i just went out to look at mine. My wires are arranged 1-4-3-2 just like in Jerry's diagram. I think what's confusing you is that his diagram is showing the towers on the distributor and not the magnets on the disk. In other words, the you need to change numbers on the magnets you Sharpied on...

    Ford 300 Inline Six

There's no oil pump. The way I determined the amount of oil to run in the sump was to run with the highest level of sump oil that would not smoke badly and spit oil out the exhaust. I don't think it's necessary to have a high oil level for the connecting rods to dip into. There will be plenty of...

Offenhauser Inline 4 cylinder, Might Midget Model Engine Build

My numbers are probably way conservative, but for CNC I can walk away and mow the lawn while the gear is being cut. If you do it manually you might want to be more aggressive on the depth of cut so you don't fall asleep at the wheel. It sounds like you were just running too much rpm for a 1-3/4"...

Eccentric, Again, really nice job. If it's any help, I cut my Stressproof gears at 250 rpm, 3 ipm, and .010" depth of cut. I believe my cutter came from Travers. - Terry

    Ford 300 Inline Six

It's the camera angle making the fuel lines look so close to the exhaust. The natural curve in the return line along with the tubing loom keeps them both safely away from the heat. - Terry

    Ford 300 Inline Six

Fine tuning was simpler than expected. With the engine rev'd up as high as I was comfortable with, the needle valve was adjusted for a peak. Although the tuning was a bit broader than I'm accustomed to, I'm not sure it was worth the hassle I ran into with the needle's 8-80 threads. The engine...
