    Valve timing

OK Thanks. I am not in the shop today but I have some things to try tomorrow. The engine is basically an upscaled version of the Upshur. I built the Upshur but was never able to get that to run so I decided to try a larger version. After building about 30 engines I have had very poor luck with...

    Valve timing

    Pretty straightforward.

    Valve timing

It is an engine that I designed as kind of a composite of several horizontal twin engines. Nothing exotic about it, pretty standard design.

    Valve timing

Yes. I have been through this so many times it is making me dizzy but I am missing something.

    Valve timing

I have a question which I should know the answer to but I am not doing well. I am building a horizontal twin IC engine. My thinking is that the two cylinders should fire 180° apart. I have both cylinder set up for exhaust to open 40° BBDC and close 20° ATDC. Intake open 15° BTDC and close 45°...

    Lets Talk about Engine Drawings

A couple of things which I have noticed: Since the advent of CAD drawings folks seem to have a lot of really weird dimensions. When I see a dimension like. 1.336 I immediately assume that the dimension is critical. Usually it just means that something was placed in approximately the correct...

    Lets Talk about Engine Drawings

My main objective is to be able to produce the part without having to use a calculator to determine the position. That frequently violates the rules about double dimensioning. The use of DRO makes many dimensions incorrect according to the rules and if I am going to be using the DRO I frequently...

    Flathead hit and miss engine???

I found my old slide rule a year or so ago and showed it to my grandson. I bought it about 1960 when I was ain college for about $25 which was a lot of money when the average wage was about $100/week. In one of my first jobs we had to recap costs/profit on our jobs. Every purchase was marked up...

    Ring grooves

Thanks. I will probably order a couple of inserts and make a holder. I don't understand why the holders are so expensive. I just got a Traverse flyer and the holders are only $82 which is $60 less. Inserts are $23 instead of $17.

    Ring grooves

The inserts look good at $17 but the price of the holder will shock you. $140 for a 3/8" square with a corner notch seems kind of excessive. I have one of the other type which clamps from the top which is more complex and those are only about $35. 1.5mm is the narrowest insert though. I wonder...

    Ring grooves

I will probably have to just invest in some carbide grooving bits. I have looked at them before and hesitated because of the cost but that is probably false economy. Thanks

    Ring grooves

I have never tried them for ring grooves but I have tried them to cut off rings from a blank and my observation is that the wheels flop around like a paper snow bird.

    Ring grooves

Yes I am backing out the cutter before moving it over to widen the groove. I am wondering if the reason why I am successful sometimes and not at other times is because I have the cutter set at a slight angle to the part. This could give a better cut on the bottom of the groove and a worse cut...

    Ring grooves

I seem to have a problem with ring sealing. Usually after a lot of screwing around I finally get the rings to seal. I think that the problem is the finish on the side of the ring groove. The finish on the side of the groove has to be smooth, especially on the lower side of the groove. A good...

    Making a distributor cap

I made a distributor cap on my 3D printer. Worked OK and easy to make.

Bought a new shop stool today---

Brian: I am not sure what is going on in Canada but the stool that you got used is $57 US on Amazon. Amazon does not even show stools in the $300 range. I never use a stool so I have not really looked. I have one in the corner which I never use except as a place to set stuff on.

    Head gasket

I have placed two additional screws in the valve area and I no longer have a leak at the head when using a teflon gasket. Still having a problem getting enough compression to run even using O rings. Valves are sealing and there does not seem to be leakage around the piston but still not enough...

    O Ring for piston rings

I am not having much success with the O rings. I have remade the pistons with the proper groove and they give better compression for a little while but the life of the O rings is short. I have honed and lapped the cylinders and I have tried several sets of O rings but when I try to start the...

    Flathead hit and miss engine???

If you made it horizontal it would not look like a tower. Engines were made both horizontal and vertical.

Total new-comer to CAD. Which programme to choose.

There are two big advantages to Atom 3D. First it is fairly easy to learn. Second the program lives on my machine, not in the cloud. I tried Free Cad and just got more confused the more I worked with it. After learning how to use Atom 3D I could probably go back to Free Cad and make more sense...
