    Deals on Alibre

I currently use the SE Community Edition, the only crippling feature is that the native files produced with it cannot be opened on a fully licensed SE license. Exports to CAM are handled via STP, or IGES, I export to BobCad where I apply tool paths for milling or to Simplify 3D for 3D printed...

    Wanted Champion V3 spark plugs?

Making glow plugs is much easier than spark plugs, the big difference being that the electrical insulation requirements at 2V is much less demanding than say the 10Kv of a spark plug. I am making a batch of 5 glow plugs as a trial for high performance model aircraft engines, I will post some...

    Toyan engines

Absolute load of carp statement, small four strokes in series production always get left behind by 2 strokes. OS make a range of 2 stroke 3.5cc engines, currently their 3.5cc engines have certain models that are over 2 hp. A clue about power outputs of these Toyan style engines can be seen in...

Are lathe tool carbide inserts supposed to be sharp?

I think it was one of the last Compact 5's made and was probably done from the parts bin, excepting the spindle issue it is great. I paid £30 for a second hand spindle on Ebay. The other spindle was fine if you were working down to 0.00075" (3/4's of a thou) but not finer as I always got foxed...

Are lathe tool carbide inserts supposed to be sharp?

Maybe you summed it up as mystical precision and with care and good feeling/mechanical sympathy the mystique is smashed !!

Are lathe tool carbide inserts supposed to be sharp?

Agree, but it did have a poor spindle from new, kind of looked like a cam, I bought another off of Ebay which was really nice and changed the bearings at the same time. Good bearings are very cheap now. B.

Are lathe tool carbide inserts supposed to be sharp?

Who said they were standard bearings? No all joking aside, I have changed the bearings but they are only SKF Explorers with a slightly better than normal precision, I think they cost about £28.00 each. The lathe is turning super well, it is difficult to tell the pistons from MB supplied ones...

Are lathe tool carbide inserts supposed to be sharp?

DCMT 070202 PCD 1500 Diamond Turning Insert for Aluminium Alloys with >12% Si content Associated Production Tools (shop-apt.co.uk) The best improvement I have ever made to any machine tool I have ever owned and all for £30.00 worked the same on 6082 T6 as well. B.

Are lathe tool carbide inserts supposed to be sharp?

Hello Jason Yes the piston is 30% silicon, it is RSA444 material, although the setters were done from regular aluminium 6082 T6 more than likely and this machined equally well with the same characteristics from the lathe, you may notice that the compound slide is canted around at 1 degree to...

Are lathe tool carbide inserts supposed to be sharp?

Different cutting tools as much as anything else have their place, I was taught in a formal apprenticeship how to sharpen HSS and I still do this on custom tools but given the choice I go carbide inserts every time. My lathe is an EMCO 5, I am the only owner from new and it is nicely setup...

Are lathe tool carbide inserts supposed to be sharp?

My experience is that the smaller the machine tool the more critical having good cutting tools is to getting good results. Don't believe any of the hog wash you hear about carbide only being for production machining, it is just about the most ingenuous advice that is pushed around on model...

    Wise choice or not?

Ray I understand your question, the biggest hurdle you face is learning to produce a decent 3D model of what you desire to print. Once you have a simple 3D model it is much quicker to get a 3D print than it was to learn the 3D CAD. There are a heap of low cost or free 3D cad and most of them...

Ban on small engines in California

David I was merely pointing out that they had got a grip on reducing pollution not that it was a place that I would like to live, I am aware of some of the vagaries of how Californians can behave and in particular some of the political elite. B.

Ban on small engines in California

Ken I don't know if you are writing about my California pollution observation, but the 1980's pollution levels around LA were not viable to continue with, no matter what it's composition. I doubt any pollution controls will eliminate CO2 from the atmosphere, so this is a non story. B.

Ban on small engines in California

To get back on topic to a degree, Say what you like about California environmental controls but the state has made massive strides in reversing pollution. I live in the UK and I occasionally visit California (about once every two decades) the pollution/smog levels are dramatically/visibly less...

I just want to say that this is one of the most interesting message threads I have ever seen, keep up the good work.

Chinese 4 stroke model camshaft repair advice

I agree with no right and wrong way, but in a way you seem to keep the Myford for 'Best' work and that tells something about the Grizzly. I just don't see the point when there is good/better American and European machines on the second hand market.

Chinese 4 stroke model camshaft repair advice

Yes and there are millions of people in China doing the same thing as you, there is always a satisfied customer somewhere for a cheap piece of equipment. Some people get satisfaction from using a really nice piece of machinery to turn out high quality parts but millions don't.

Chinese 4 stroke model camshaft repair advice

You are correct, the Chinese can make anything they desire to the highest standards but the desire is not there in consumer items like this engine being made by a start-up company where cost and availability dictates where the next meal comes from.
