mini lathe struggles with course threads

Thanks Marv, my to-do list is getting longer by the day and you spindle crank looks ingenious and very useful, the problem is that what would take most of you guys an hour would take me a week to accomplish and would probably look like a road accident. David

mini lathe struggles with course threads

Thanks John, that's put my mind at rest. I like the idea of a handle on the leadscrew, I assume that I could also use that to do a very fine manual feed? David

mini lathe struggles with course threads

Did a few practice runs cutting threads on my 7 x 14 mini lathe and noticed that when the change gears are set up for very course threads the machine really struggles even when it is not cutting, is this normal? I cant find any binding on the lead screw and am at a bit of a loss as to why it...

    Safety is no accident

My eldest is always on the lookout for money making schemes, he gives me a fully itemised invoice for his pocket money/allowance every Saturday morning and if I don't have the cash on me he makes me write a cheque!! I told him the other day that when I was an apprentice if we were caught...

    LTD stirling engine

Well the ferrite idea is a non-starter unfortunately, I tried to turn a small piece down to the correct diameter earlier and the ferrite seems to be made up from iron fillings (should have guessed from the name) compressed together with some sort of binder, probably epoxy. The material doesn't...

    LTD stirling engine

Thanks Eric, Ground my first boring bar yesterday which looks a bit funny but seems to work OK so I will probably tackle the power cylinder tonight. I am planning to use a ferrite from an old PC power supply as the power piston, any thoughts? David

    LTD stirling engine

OK, this is the story so far on my first project on my lathe and my first proper engine, I'm not using plans just using the "ugly" LTD as a basis. I have the top and bottom plates for the displacer cylinder done, I'm not that happy with the grooves or seats for the cylinder itself, not sure...

Largest piston engine in the world---

I can remember seeing a tv show on discovery showing these http://www.emma-maersk.com/engine/Wartsila_Sulzer_RTA96-C.htm 2 stroke diesel engines, perhaps not the biggest ever made but with a 300 ton crankshaft a 3ft bore and 8ft stroke pretty big!!! some nice pictures on that site too! David...

Well I've only been a member for just over a day and I already feel VERY welcome, a personal thank you to Rake60 for putting this board together, I know from experience that apart from the small matter of the technical issues and sheer hard work of running a board like this, it's is the board...
