    Needs over 40lbs. to run?

Well no air leaking , so started to loosen the nuts (although I didn't take off the cylinder cover). With most nuts loosened I was happy to see that the engine would then turn over very slowly at 16#. I then tightened the nuts and could tell that some seemed to interfire with the engine speed...

    Needs over 40lbs. to run?

With info from the top two posts I can see that first problem is something is very tight and a dismantle is in order. Disappointed that this engine requires any work on my part since seller said it runs well on air. But I love the design so much that it will just have to become my next project...

While on the subject of steam ... boilers!

I a newbie and really enjoy following different threads to learn but one of the more thank less projects seem to be boiler making. Alot of work and time devoted to make sure it's safe and when you get all done--it just sits there. Having said that, there's nothing like a well built boiler with...

Request for onward career advice on retiring from the Armed Forces.

You didn't mention how old you were but I started having health issues with my back in my 40's. I'd stay away from any new career that involved working out in the weather or hard work such as house construction. Go for the CAM-Cad training or locksmithing From the posts to your question I'd pick...

Running on steam - boiler choices & are "toy" boilers ok to use ?

Why not just grab the steam from the filler hole. Solder a barb onto the water filler plug and drill a hole threw it. Also check the whistles since you may be able to remove top of it and slip hose over it. The safety valves that are on these things usaully are set to 1 1/2 bars ( 20lbs)...

    Metric availability rant

Tony, Here in the US I was equally fustrated when I went to both Home Depot and Lowe's and was told they did not have any metric drills. Since I've been working on toy steam engines I've really started to dislike the bigbox stores. I've had some luck with the some independents (not many...

Getting thru the hard skin of a cast flywheel

I want to modify an old cast flywheel by cutting a 6 mm channel to a depth of 1 mm into the side and boy it that hard! Cutter doesn't do much. Have seen discussions in the past that you need to address the hard skin of the metal when it was cast. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated
