Carbon epoxy engine casing patented and working ! So fiberglass or WEST?

That's interesting and the first I've heard of it. I could see making the cylinders from wrapping carbon around a rod and using vacuum bagging. Then using more carbon fiber to tie the cylinders together like a normal block. Another option would be to make a block from carbon fiber and use...

    Good Starter Engine?

What is a good starter engine to make that has a inlet and exhaust at the top of the cylinder? That looks like the direction I want to go with a future more difficult build so I want to start with something along those lines. I will be running it off compressed air or CO2. To further...

Piston sealing devices, iron rings vs. everything else

I dont know how I missed this post but I have thought about using these teflon backup rings for my engine. http://www.theoringstore.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=14_552 The ones that I have bought before had the cut overlapping so it wasn't "open" like what the picture looks like. There...

    Piston and Cylinder stock

Those are some great ideas. I also thought about a moped/ scooter one but haven't seen any cylinder sleeves. The tube could be an answer to thst though if i could find a good id. It must not be an expensive enough part on those to warrant a sleeve.

    Piston and Cylinder stock

I dont have a good way to make a really smooth cylinder or piston surface finish wise. Have any of you found a good premade cylinder or piston? Preferably it would be more in a stock form where I could cut it to length but beggars cant be choosers. I thought about things like drill bushings...

    CO2 Engine Design

Why dont you just to a different style valve and do away with the bearing as the valve? That would fix the issue of the bearing size and weight and should allow the engine to start and stop getting pressure at the right time. How to make a sealed valve is another issue but should be doable...

    CO2 Engine Design

My intentions are two fold. I want to initially build a small desktop engine to get a basis for how it works. Then from there make some different versions to test out how they perform. I do realize a scaled engine wont necessarily work like a full size one. After I can get my head around how...

    CO2 Engine Design

Enthropy455 I know what you mean about the heat and pressure. Even back in my paintball days I remember keeping the CO2 tanks, when we used those, out of the sun. I wouldn't heat the main cylinder but maybe a small volume in the supply tube. I talked with my swagelok rep one day about how...

    CO2 Engine Design

CO2 is more expansive than air from what I have been reading. Thats why it caught my attention. If i recall correctly CO2 will expand about 3000% from liquid. Air and steam are less than half that unless I missed some detail. For the engine I wanted to design and make I was going to preheat...

    CO2 Engine Design

Thanks for the thorough answer. My goal is to one make a engine to try out (probably the one you posted now) and to make a three or four cylinder version of my own design. I have seen some engines made how you are describing using a bearing and pin as a pressure valve. It seems like that...

    CO2 Engine Design

I have been reading a few posts on here trying to get some info on engines built using CO2 as a power source and ran across JAndrew's thread on air engine design. I dont want to stry his thread so I figured I would start a new one. It had some pretty good info design wise and answered some...

    Superheated Steam

Thanks for the replies. The engine design is still in the air because i havent decided between a radial or a swashplate type engine. I would really like to try the swashplate since its just interesting to me. The first one will be steam or air but I would like to take into account a...

    Superheated Steam

I am interested in learning some more about superheated steam and any engines that use it. I have found some info scattered around but not too much. I am interested in it because of the extra power it can provide. I also read that it needs pure water in order to be superheated. What I read...

    Pistons and Cylinders

I have read through quite a bit about various material types for pistons and cylinders but havent seen this brought up. Some of what I have read on various forums and from prototype steam engines say there are certain materials avaliable where you dont have to use a lubricant. I could maybe...

    Swashplate Engine plans?

I want to make a swashplate engine but most of the posts I have found dont show the finished product. I have seen the patents for the Mk 48 torpedo, the history site on the axial engines, etc. so I have an idea how it works. Have any of you built one and can show some pictures and comment on...

    Lathe Attachment for Mill

I have a small Grizzly G0619 mill. I have A good many collets and have a rotary table with a 3 jaw on top of it. I also have a tailstock foe it but need to make something smaller. My idea was to make a center for larger work and mount that to the mills table. Then use that contraption I...

    Lathe Attachment for Mill

I know some of you have been in the same boat as me and dont have a lathe but do have a mill. So who has some ideas on how to make a toolholder that can move in and out as well as up and down so i can turn some small stuff on the mill? Something like the milling table the mill uses turned on...

    Want to make energy please.

It looks like your going more the gasification route but I have always been interested in making a steam engine. The good thing about them is they can be powered by all kinds of different sources.

    Chain Source

Those were some great links and exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. GWRdriver: I just updated my profile info so the location info is there now. I usually have that there so I must have just missed it on this forum. Thanks for the heads up as it is good info to have when people are...

    Chain Source

Are there any sources for small chains and sprokets to use as various drives. Something smaller than a bike chain is kind of what I thought about. I thought if I ever made anything with some size an oring or something similar wouldnt have the bite to not slip. I guess a toothed belt could be...
