    Temperature, Colder than Absolute Zero

Hi All You Egg Heads, Unless I have missed something in the last 35 years since I went to UnI to do MECH ENG, at absolute zero all the molecules and atoms are at a stand still and there is no migration between the orbital paths, zero energy state, the only way this negative energy thing could...

    ML Midge piston

You should be able to calculate this given rhe throw of the crankshaft, the legnth of the connecting rod ( center to center ) and the position of the piston at BDC or TDC. In fairness all these dimensions should be clearly marked on the original plans. But it seems that some designers wish to...

Thanks Brian, That is interesting, I will try a regrind tomorrow. A.G

    Brazed carbide boring bars

Hi, If I were to regrind these beauties, what are the correct angles ? I maybe able to salvage something out of these lot. Many Thanks, A.G

    Brazed carbide boring bars

Hi, Further to my previous post I would like to add that I have a Sherline supplied brazed carbide external threading tool that was truly sharp and ground to a mirror finish when I got it, it is chipped now but perhaps it could be salvaged once I learn how to do it. I don't know if these are...

    drill wobble.

Hi speedy, I have two sets of these import drill sets, one set is the no's imperial and the other a metric in 0.1 mm steps. Both sets have a no of drills that are not straight and true. For a long while I blamed my jacobs chucks for this but it is the drill. I also have quite a few Dormer...

    Brazed carbide boring bars

Thank you both Tin and Phil, I was using the shortest of the bars ( they are 8 mm shank size ) to open up a hole that I had drilled 9.2 mm to 10mm. I was using a chinese made mini boring head of 35 mm diameter and I shortened the shank to make it just stick out of the boring head for the...

    Brazed carbide boring bars

Hi, I have a set of import brazed carbide boring bars ( the type for the boring head ), the stuff is useless, the edges are just dull and even the lightest cut causes chatter even in aluminium. Is there anyway that these could be sharpened up or shall I just throw them away and put it down...

    HSS Bits from Proxxon

Hi Gus, I think that you should be able to grind the fluted chip breaker section with a Dremel and a small cylinderical grinding wheel ( the long one ). I am sure that I have seen these some whree on the Ebay. Just grind the sides first and then run the tool along the side increasing the depth...

    L1418 steel?

Hi Den, 4140 and 4340 steels are mainly used for high stress applications such as automotive crankshafts, connecting rods, etc. Surely these grades of steel ( high tensile and hardened in their T form ) need to be precision ground rather than machined on a lathe or mill, I personally think...

    HSS Bits from Proxxon

Hi, I bought the same set from Chronos about 18 months ago, the Form 1 is quite good for general purpose cutting of steel and aluminium, but my tangential tool holder and 8% cobalt bit is superior. A.G

    L1418 steel?

Hi, The 18 denotes that there is 0.18% carbon in the steel not 18% as I first stated. BTW I was browsing through Timken site, they claim that they have over 300 standard steel alloys and some special purpose ones. What a minefield. In any case this steel seems to be an elusive one. Regards...

    L1418 steel?

Hi Swifty, I will dig out the information just to refresh my own memory. Regards, A.G

    L1418 steel?

Hi, EN1A pb is roughly the equivalent of the 12L14 US designation, it has a machinability factor of 150 against 100 for EN1A ( still free cutting ) and 50 for EN24 T, so it is super easy to machine and achieve great finish. Regards, A.G

    L1418 steel?

Hi, I won't go to court with this but if they have followed standard designation then, L means loww alloy, special purpose 1 means it is a low carbon steel 4 means the alloying element is molybdenum 18 should mean that either it is 18% carbon or there is 18% alloy there, I am not quite sure...

    Casting Boiler shells?

Hi, I tend to agree with Bob, there is no way of knowing how to engineer a cast boiler shell and rate it against a drawn shell unless you have two identical boilers, one made of the drawn stuff and the other from casting and then test both to destruction under lab conditions and then compare...

Hi Wagon 173, I am sure that it can be adapted to be of use in other applications, it is a very unusual looking one though. Regards, A.G

    Small boring head

Hi Harold, Many thanks for your reply, I have already gathered the materials for the boring head and will probably start the construction soon. I think that the free length of the boring bar has a lot to do with the flex that a boring head set up suffers, IMHO most of the boring bars that I...

    Small boring head

Hi Harold, May I first say that I have a couple of your books and I have thoroughly enjoyed them and recommend them in particular to inexperienced soles like myself. Of all the designs that I have studied, yours seems to fit my requirements the best. Do you think however, that this design is...
