A small pile of X2 mods...

I've got a light made with those ring-shaped LED's. I think I used and 80mm and 100mm (I'd have to check). Anything smaller and it wouldn't fit over the spindle. Works OK except one of them puts out a blue-tint instead of white.

    Grizzly $25 DRO Query

Got one of the 12" units mounted on the Z-axis. Just drilled/tapped two holes in the column for the scale and used the leftover bolt from the torsion-arm to mount the reader to the head. Comparing it alongside an import 2" DI, it seems to be off about .001 every 1/2". It's still way more...

    Grizzly $25 DRO Query

Grizzly now has the longer scales online. Sweeeet. http://www.grizzly.com/products/0-6-Digital-Fractional-Horizontal-Vertical-Remote-Scale/T21577 http://www.grizzly.com/products/12-Remote-Digital-Readout-Inch-Metric-Fraction/T23012

    Grizzly $25 DRO Query

Just for grins and to put another bug in their ear--I emailed Grizzly about when they might offer the longer versions (since they were now available "elsewhere"). Got a response that they don't have any info on when/if they might get them and that they usually only intro new products at the...

No 1 or is it #25

One tip from a newb. I started to make the marking jig for this engine and gave up. Instead, I turned a sharp point on a small rod that fit neatly into the hole in the cylinder head. Then assembled the whole thing and that pointed rod was used like a scriber to draw a nice arc on the frame as...

    Thread Geometry

Yep, I wouldn't get too discouraged at this point (still learning right?). I've only turned a couple of threads just for fun but read a lot about it. Needed to do one for real on a new compound lead screw and would be threading under power (vs. using a spindle handle). Turned the major...

    x2 belt drive pulley material

Mine are made from some scrounged up scrap-yard scraps. They're probably 6061 or 2024 and they are working fine. Not sure how long it'll take for a rubber belt to wear out a metal pulley but mine are going on about a year with no indication of wear.

    Poppin Hoglet Display

Nice...an engine that really does something. The rubber tire looks great. Have you considered making it out of something more lightweight though so it doesn't bog down the engine so much? Waiting for the next update...

Truing up a block in the mill

I'm still a novice. Before I got my lathe and mill I watched and read EVERYTHING I could find online about machining. The MIT vids were/are a godsend along with Virtual Machine Shop and YouTube. I watched to learn about the machines and tools and setups, etc. They convinced me even more I wanted...

    x2 mill

And one other thought on the belt-drive. When you remove that bakealite/plastic/whatever-it-is base from the motor and mount the motor direct to the new plate--you'll be cutting off one of the ways for air to get to vents in the motor. So make sure to bore that thru-hole plenty big to clear the...

    x2 mill

I picked up two 14v Hitachi drills from the scrap yard this weekend ($0.25 a pound) for just such a project! One of 'em the trigger is broke off but still works. Have not tested the other. And I need a good power supply still. I was thinking of re-using the trigger as the speed control by...

    x2 mill

My take on it: http://s119.photobucket.com/albums/o152/wavedudetx/MetalProjects/MillBeltDrive/ And a few updates. I actually run mine on Low speed most of the time--not High as originally posted. And I think I used Hoss' plans and not Rollett's--but they're all pretty similar. And I took...

    x2 mill

Nice work on the pulley. Go over to the GrizHFMinimill group on yahoo and get the Rollet belt drive plans from the files section. That's what I modeled mine after (along with Pitkin, Brewster, and Hoss' ideas as well). Don't remember what the ratio was but it works fine (I run mine in the...

What type of boring head do yaw have?

I have this one. It sux. If you look at it there is no real "gib". It has to flex a rather large chunk of metal to clamp it in place after adjusting. It works but it's a pain. http://www.grizzly.com/products/Boring-Head-Set-MT3/H5678

Using end face of end mill

Hah...learned something. I never thought of offsetting the bit and trying to make it cut w/only one side. I ususally just centered it up and ran it right down the middle. Never occured to me that it would be trying to bend the stock sideways. But for thin stock it makes sense to NOT do that...

    X2 mill power feed

Hmmmm, HF has these for $17us with a coupon. Might be worth hacking one up to see what's inside and how it would work.
