    Broken crankshaft !?

Hi Mihn Thanh There is a lot of good advice here albeit fragmented in all the posts. To summarise(I think) The first thing to get the fracture is stress. No stress no fracture. You are using three main journals So alignment of the bearings(line boring) and shaft straightness and bearing diameter...

    Broken crankshaft !?

I had six of the vertical trolleys made but only one broke. ;) Still looks like a stress fracture to me.

    Broken crankshaft !?

Looks very much like the corner is too sharp causing a stress raiser. You need to radius the corner more to prevent this. I remember doing the exact same many years ago on a 40mm diameter vertical shaft. It had a 200Kg drum on it that was rotated by hand and abruptly stopped every couple of...

How to Cool a sealed 10 gallon container?

You could cool using the workings of a small benchtop type refrigerator.

Fuel poof lacquer or varnish recommendations?

I second Yacht varnish. Alternatively you could use modellers fuel proof dope.

How to limit swarf into the chuck ?

I found a similar problem on my warco/ chinese chuck. I put it down to the clearance between the outside of the scroll plate and the inside of the chuck being too great. Careful cleaning before changing jaws is a must.

    Karl Benz engine 1886

I found a pic of the finished crank too.

    Karl Benz engine 1886

I only have a photo of the part finished crank but this is how I made it in one piece on my Warco 240. I roughed out the two end diameters leaving +2mm for cleaning up. Then holding the long end in collet chuck mounted in the four jaw to get the throw. I machined the centre and inside faces of...

    A new ignition circuit

I did my version for the non electronics guys amongst us who may want to try. I would be happy for someone to check and critique please.

    Tungsten tipped rivets

I read somewhere that green is best. Can't remember why or where. Anyway for model engines that run mostly on low revs and for short periods wouldn't stainless steel be good enough?

    A new ignition circuit

As long as it's OK spec wise I will sort the orientation using the datasheet. I just wanted to be sure it works with your circuit. Many thanks.

    A new ignition circuit

Hi Guys. One more question please. The 2N4124 transostor is no longer available and Farnell have offered me this as an alternative. Will it work OK in this circuit. https://cz.farnell.com/on-semiconductor/bc547cbu/transistor-bipol-npn-45v-to-92/dp/2453791?ost=bc547cbu Thanks Tony

Thanks. I missed that as I was just looking at the later posts.

    A new ignition circuit

Hi Guys Have the specs for the 3040P changed. The datasheet looks a lot different to the one shown on the schematics. https://www.mouser.com/datasheet/2/308/ISL9V3040P3-1306581.pdf Does it make any difference if they have. I am about to order some.

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

Could you use contact breaker or a microswitch, set to be normally open, for this type of coil?

    why people like water-cooled v8?

In the real world probably because the waterjacket is sound deadening. Also because cooling all 8 cylinders evenly with air is quite difficult. Air cooling is more suited to rear engined, as per the Tatra V8, to get through cooling as opposed to front end where the air would be blocked by the...

Shop built sparkplugs for model engines

Nichrome has high resistivity and is used for heating elements, Whether it is enough to make a difference between that and tungsten or carbon steel in a small spark plug I do not know.

    valve lapping

If concentricity is ensured by the machining process with a decent surface finish then grinding is a waste of time and effort. The seat and the bore are machined from the same end without removing from the chuck and the seat and stem are machined without removing from the chuck. I have only...

    Mini diesel engine.

''You have not understood the whole point of 0.03 mm. It is not the lifting height of the camshaft itself. When Find Hansen measured the 0.03 mm pump stroke it was at idle he could observe how big the pump stroke was to be able to run the engine at idle.'' I fully understand, as I am sure Minh...
