Inspired build of the Benz 1886 Engine

Thanks Ray. I was thinking your compression ration would be around there. Your engine runs much better than the TS kit which has a very low compression ratio of just over 2:1

Inspired build of the Benz 1886 Engine

That's one of the best running benz engines I have heard. Can you tell us what compression ratio you used and what you set your inlet timing at.

Out of curiosity, Does your valve open on the pull stroke of the link rod or the push stroke. The cam rotation looks like reverse of original, I am assuming Clockwise engine rotation viewed from above.

    Hi from nearly central Europe

Welcome Tom. I'm in the north. I think there are a couple of members in the south of the country.

Big ask for a small lathe

I've finally got most of the material together to build the 1/4 scale Gardner 3F. Inspired by JasonB's fabrications I decided to go down that route. I only have a Warco 240 lathe albeit with a bigger motor and VFD. So how was I going to put the drip edge on the base plate which measures 300mm x...

    Right.

    Worm Gears

These are two types of gear being discussed. Worm and wormwheel and crossed helical. Both of which are used on 90 degree shafts. Although Timo may well be correct in assuming the OP meant crossed helical as this is an engine forum, he did ask about worms. Some general info here on the two...

    Worm Gears

The ratios are calculated by the number of 'starts' on the worm and the number of teeth on the wormwheel. A worm can have just one 'start' giving very high ratios and high torque. On these with a low number of starts the worm must be the driver .

Inspired build of the Benz 1886 Engine

I am making one of the TS engines and as Jasonb says there are a lot of shortcomings. The one thing that helps with the valve sealing is the very low compression ratio. less than 2.5:1 However I am raising the compressino ratio on mine and I still expect the valve to seal. All surfaces are...

    Hit and Miss Design Ratios

For me a 1.4-1.5 stroke to 1 piston dia. ratio is about right for a slow runner. I have seen some engines from 1.25 : 1 Usually the smaller the ratio the faster the engine will run. Con rod length can vary dramatically but the minimum is that which will allow the conrod to clear the bore when...

    IC Engine Scaling and Design

Very often function has to take priority over scale, as do material choices. Often fasteners are an approximation unless you are machining every nut and bolt. Although a lot depends on the scale you are trying to achieve. The smaller the scale the more difficult the choices and compromises.

Conversion of 4 x 6 bandsaw for vertical use only

I use the same saw for both horizontal and vertical using a better quality table fixed to the bottom guide. Your changes are much better for vertical use and the adaptors are a great idea. I am going to rethink the way I use mine.

Small air power supply for engines models.

You can also use a normal CO2 regulator and use an adaptor.

It's a shame that people who contribute in the way of content, which in itself generates advertising income for this site, are not considered as supporting members. Not necessarily after a couple of posts but certainly...

Needle bearings in a model diesel ?

Just my two pennoth for what it's worth. I have seen needles used on a big end and have nothing to add in that regard. My thoughts are around the small end where I cannot see needle rollers working well at all. After all the small end does not rotate very much. Most of the forces would act on...

    safety valves

Just one point missing when making your own safety valve. The safety valve must pass enough steam so that with the boiler on full fire, the pressure does not rise when the valve is open.

I use a CBN wheel for finishing. Expensive initially but worth it.

    Reduce engine size.

I appreciate the technical aspects of Kens1's and other posts but for me what is important in scaling small engines(in my case only single cylinder) is the aesthetics. I want it to look like the original. I want it to run reliably as a display model and not required to perform at scale power...
