    Wanted Embossed / printed nameplate

Does anyone in UK or EU know where I can get a couple of embossed plates made for my Gardner. Either aluminium or brass. I thought of 3D printed which I can get done locally but I dont think they will be durable or how well they will stick to the aluminium sides of the base. All Ideas...

Size standards for homemade engines !!?

I wouldn't base my engines on a standard piston size. With only a small lathe to work on the maximum flywheel size I can do is 8.5 - 9 inch. So I decide what scale I am using depending upon flywheel size. Piston size is developed from that scale(approximately).

    Compressed air safety

When I designed trolleys for heavy load use in autoclaves(about 30 years ago) I specified austenitic stainless because the environment contained traces of chlorine. I recollect at the time there were instances of roof tension wires catastrophically failing in swimming pools because the...

    Compressed air safety

The failure rate shouldn't be much different if both are designed to the material limits and maintained correctly. Although Aluminium may not rust, it still can corrode, and it would certainly suffer stress cracking unless the thickness of the shell was dramatically increased over a steel one...

    Compressed air safety

Rhetorical question but how many people with a compressor, test or even just inspect their air receiver ever let alone every few years.

    Compressed air safety

My small compressor only contains compressed air when it is needed. It is never left with air in overnight or when not being used. If it has been used it is drained each day from the main airline and only the last couple of pounds go through the drain valve which is left open till I use it...

Machining a clearance for a flywheel

OF course. I can see that now. 🙃Thanks to you both.

Machining a clearance for a flywheel

Not sure I understand what you mean Jason. In the pic shown I did not need to move the cross slide so it was easier to clamp to the saddle(though more difficult to set up). If it was clamped only to the cross slide then that axis could be utilised.

Machining a clearance for a flywheel

Variation on a theme. I scalloped out this cylinder mount using a boring bar / fly cutter on my lathe.

Machining the flat section for the exhaust valve.

    Working on the Gardner

Another tall order. Line boring the main crank bearing housings. Finding a set up that worked took a lot longer than the boring.

    Working on the Gardner

Been doing a few hours on the bandsaw today and couldn't resist putting a few parts together to give me some confidence for the long journey ahead.

A New Home for my Benz Engine

That engine location looks OK. The diff pulley could be arranged to reduce the speed a bit. Also the sprocket ratio could help.

A New Home for my Benz Engine

Do you have this drawing Ray? I missed sending it with the others. It looks like you could push the engine much further back as the crank is just in front of the rear of the back wheels on the original.

    Oil Pump Design

What type of oil pump and what will it be used for. There are many varieties from oil well pumps through to fuel pumps. Piston pumps, gear pumps, hand pumps etc.

A New Home for my Benz Engine

Hi Ray. I did a lot of work on the Benz wagon. The attached file is a good start to check your chassis layout. You can scale to suit your engine and wheels etc. The drawings are basic and incomplete but fairly accurate in 1/3 scale to the original. The attachment didn't seem to work. I can email...

Inspired build of the Benz 1886 Engine

That's worth knowing Jason. I may remake a new yoke and new crank in future. For now, having basically machined everything before I discovered the compression ratio was a problem I reduced the free space at the head to give better compression. I have shelved the engine just now as I am working...
